Environmental policy:
 Principles of continuous improvements
 Preventive actions
 Minimizing the environmental impact
 Terms of co-operation
 Responsibility for the environment, paying
regard to products’ lifecycle, minimizing the
amount of waste, open interaction and
information, answering to authorities’ demands

Relationship to logistics and environment:
Warming of the sea in the cooling water discharge area is
the most significant effect. As a result, changes occur in the
aquatic vegetation.
 Nuclear power plants generate two kinds of radioactive
waste: low and intermediate-level operating waste and
high-level spent fuel.
 Olkiluoto's operating waste is compacted in drums and placed in
bedrock caverns at a depth of 70 to 100 metres beneath the power
plant site.
 Spent fuel is submerged there in water for several decades before
being placed in the final repository.
 Life cycle of the fuel: “from bedrock to bedrock”

Actions to be “green in logistics”:
Paperless functions
Environmental research, monitoring programs
the effects of the operation of Olkiluoto npp are minuscule
 The plant waste storage cave constructed in the vicinity of the Olkiluoto
npp has been operational for 10 years. The cave is used to store low and
activity level plant waste and radioactive waste material from health care
activities
 Experience from the design, construction and operation of the cave can
also be used in the construction of the spent fuel final repository

Results of being “green in logistics”
ISO 14001 standards environmental certificate for the
company´s environmental management (Det Norske
Veritas)
In the year 2001, TVO received the EMAS (Eco
Management and Audit Scheme) registration.
a certified environmental management system is in place and a
public account of environment issues is prepared.
The TVO-owned forests in southwest Finland and the
province of Uusimaa have been certified according to the
Finnish FFCS system.

Future plans:
 Further development, better results
Decreasing the amount of waste and increasing
the share of utilization waste. Primarily
exploiting the waste’s material and secondary
the energy.

Comparison with the competitors:
 The first power-plant to get the certificate
The VLJ-cave has proved excellent for its
purpose and is exemplary of the high standard of
Finnish nuclear waste management.

Our judgement:
 TVO’s product leaves the factory by high voltage
cables, so there is a low need for logistic solutions
 Nuclear power plant must have very strict
environmental norms
