Facilities:

Chains can be picked up at the Parts
Department.

Chains are issued as needed, by calling
1-800-251-6011.

Chains should be returned to any USX
Shop or chain bank.
Load Locks & Straps:
–
Must be authorized by your FM.
–
You must provide the shop a receipt,
issued by operations, to receive your load
locks or straps.
–
There is only two load locks permitted per
truck.
–
Your truck will be issued to straps. If not
on the truck they can be picked up at the
parts room.

Authorization forms can be obtained at the shop
service desk.
Over the road truck washes are not authorized.

modified.
• What can be put in your truck?

You are responsible for any damage incurred for
anything that you have installed or added to the truck.
•
You will be responsible for any truck you return with
abusive damage (i.e. holes punched in the interior, pet
damage, wiring harnesses cut, etc.)
•
Interior cabinets can’t be altered or removed.
•
Refrigerators:

XM Radios:
– It is your responsibility to
have any XM Radio installed
in the tractor.
– You are responsible for any
damage incurred during the
installation or removal of the
XM Radio.
•
CB Radios:
– The Maintenance Shop
Personnel will install
your CB Radio for you.
•
Inverters:
– Maintenance Shop Personnel will install the inverter for you.
– Inverters can be no larger than a 1750 watt unit.
– USX will supply the wiring harness for your inverter.
– Prior to purchasing an inverter, check the wattage needed for the
items you are planning to utilize in the truck
Can’t install this style. The power studs are too small.
They have to be at least ¼ inch in diameter, if they are
any smaller they are most likely to break off.
This style is OK to install. The power supply
connections are more than 4 inches apart.
This style of inverter is OK to install, even though the power
studs are closer than 4 in. the design allows it to be
installed
•
When you need to have repairs or servicing done to
your truck you must first contact your FM for
approval.
•
The “Service Desk” at each shop location will issue
you a work request form – Complete the form and
turn it back into the Service Desk.
•
On the work request form, you will only need to
complete the following information:

Date
Truck Number or Trailer Number
Hub Mileage for Tractors
List all complaints/issues in the comments section.
• $50 dollar for each 24 hour period.
• Non-Taxable.
• Must obtain a layover authorization number,
from your FM, for each 24-hour period.
•
Maintenance Intervals:
–
Equipment is serviced every 35,000 miles or 120 days,
which ever comes first.
–
New Equipment is initially serviced for the 1st time at 35,000
miles or 120 days, which ever comes first. Thereafter the
service is done at the “normal maintenance interval” of
35,000 miles or 120 days which ever comes first.
–
Most “major” servicing doesn’t occur until the truck has
achieved 245,000 miles.
–
If you receive a truck that has 500,000+ miles, do not
arrange the truck for long term residency. You will only
occupy the truck long enough to run the remaining miles off
the truck before the truck is traded.
–
Failing to comply with the PM mileage requirements puts us at
risk of future breakdowns that are very costly especially when
this occurs over the road. Failing to meet the required PM
services also puts us as risk of voiding the warranty
requirements of the equipment.
•
Hotel vouchers will be issued if your tractor will be in a shop overnight, and
you are unable to sleep in it.
•
If a truck can be rolled out of the shop, and ran to provide heat and/or air
conditioning – you will be required to stay in the tractor.
•
If you should need rest prior to having the truck serviced, notify the shop
personnel.
For all breakdown issues call the breakdown department at 1-800447-3152, or send a macro #20, and provide the following
information:
• Truck number
• Hub Mileage
• Your Name
• City, State, Roadway, Mile Marker, Direction of Travel
• As much information as possible concerning the breakdown:
• What is wrong?
• When did it happen?
• What noise did it make?
• What does it look like?
• What else happened at the same time, prior to, or after the issue?
• What did your gauges do?
• What fault codes are present?
Volvos:
• There is a dash display, and these
trucks have a toggle control knob.
Go into the diagnostic mode to
retrieve codes.
• There is a dash mounted display
that you will utilize to retrieve
Freightliners: codes.
Peterbilts:
• Codes are only retrievable by
maintenance personnel utilizing a
data link.
Kenworths:
Internationals:
• Codes are only retrievable by
maintenance personnel
utilizing a data link.
• The dash will display a generic
code or description, and
detailed code information is
only retrievable by
maintenance personnel using
a data link.
• Examples of when to call Break Down:
– Tractor will not run.
– Brakes are not working properly.
– Flat Tire.
– Loud “clunk” and tractor shakes when
making a right turn.
– Tractor is stuck.
– Police Dispatched.
• Examples of when NOT to call Break Down:
– Need Tail light
– Lights “flickered” but it didn’t happen
again.
– Load requires a hard hat or safety glasses,
contact fleet management instead of
breakdown.

US Xpress strives to be an industry leader in
providing you with the safest, most
comfortable equipment available. US Xpress
trucks are equipped with the following safety
features:
– ATC (Automatic Traction Control):
• This feature applies power to wheels that have
positive traction, and takes power from wheels
that have lost traction.
– ABS (Anti-lock Braking System):
• This feature utilizes a computer activated braking
system, which monitors the air pressure supplied
to the brakes. This feature helps prevent the
vehicle from sliding, by maintaining “rolling
friction” – which permits steering capability.
– LVD (Low Voltage Disconnect):
• In the event you accidentally leave a power
draining item, such as a dome light, on while
the tractor is turned off, this feature will
automatically shut off the power to the tractor
when the power drops below 12.1 volts. This
feature is designed to save the battery starting
capability of the truck.
• US Xpress Trucks are equipped with a range of Eaton
Transmissions from manual transmissions to autoshift transmissions.
– Standard Shift Transmission.
– Auto Shift Transmission:
• Clutch utilized for starting and stopping
operations.
– Ultra Shift Transmission:

Transmission.
• Smart Shift Simplicity:
– Touch Pad Shifter:
• Volvo Tractors have a touch pad
shifter that works off push button
technology. The Touch pad is
located to the right of the drivers
seat. You can put the touch pad in
the “manual” position to manually
shift to a higher or lower gear.
• Smart Shift Simplicity:
– Shift Paddle Shifter:
• Freightliner Tractors have the Shift
Paddle Shifter on the right side of
the steering wheel, which controls
the shifting operation of the truck.
With this technology you can put
the shifter in the “manual
position” and manually shift to a
higher or lower gear.
US Xpress tractors are equipped with a variety of
safety related tools to assist you, such as:
– Side Tracker Cameras – (These cameras have
adjustments that can be made for Day and Night time
driving to help eliminate possible glare)
• US Xpress tractors are equipped with a variety of
safety related tools to assist you, such as:
– Collision Mitigation Systems:
• Meritor On-Guard
• Bendix Wingman
Automatic 5th Wheel Operation
• Locking Procedure
– Back under the trailer until you make contact with the
king pin.
– Tug forward, being careful not to stall the engine.
– Set the tractor brakes.
– Attach air and electrical lines.
– Retract landing gear.
– Visually inspect the jaws, and locking mechanism of
the 5th wheel.
Automatic 5th Wheel Operation
• Locking Procedure
– Push in on the release handle and rotate
down to the right.
– If unable to push the handle all the way
in, then the jaws are not fully locked.
Notify Maintenance, if at a USX facility,
otherwise notify fleet services.
Remember, if the handle will not push
all the way in, you are at serious risk for
dropping the trailer – and this is the
driver’s responsibility.
Automatic 5th Wheel Operation
• Release Procedure:
– Set all brakes.
– Lower landing gear remove electrical and air lines.
– Put tractor in gear, ensure the clutch is depressed.
– Pull the 5th wheel release knob and hold it out.
– With your other hand release the tractor brakes.
– After brakes release, ease your foot off the clutch.
Bunk Heaters
Overview
•

Diesel fired heater
Blower powered by vehicles electrical system
Provides compartment comfort while reducing idling hours
Heater manufacturers include Espar and Webasto
Heater Location
– Located underneath bunks
– Compartment air intake vent shown in photo below
Note: Make sure air intake vent is not obstructed. Obstruction that prevents
proper air-flow could cause the unit to overheat. Overheat shutdown will occur
and the unit will automatically reset once the heater has cooled down. Once airflow obstruction is removed, the heater can be re-started by switching the heater
off and then back on.
Heater Exhaust
• Heater exhaust is routed to the exterior of the cab.
• Exhaust tube is located behind cab.
• Exhaust tube is HOT during and after operation. Please do not
touch the exhaust tube at any time.
Heater Fuel Pump
• Can be seen on the top of the vehicles fuel tank
• Pickup Tube extends into the fuel tank and stops 2” from bottom
in order to prevent the heater from completely draining your
tank as well as picking up foreign matter.

Usage Procedure

Shut off engine

Turn to on position
Note: There will be 5 second delay before heater starts to run. The heater is performing a systems
check. The blower motor starts gradually as the glow pin pre-heats the combustion chamber.
Once pre-heat takes place, the fuel metering pump starts and ignition takes place. Heat will
gradually increase after ignition.

Adjust compartment temperature (This controls how the heater cycles)
Mini-Controller:
Use Temperature Pre-selection Control Knob
Rotary Knob:
Turn clockwise to increase/counter clockwise to decrease
Note: The heater will cycle between levels to maintain setting. The
heater will continue to run in this manner until it is switched off.

Note: Once the heater is turned off the blower will continue
to run for several minutes. The heater is simply running a
cool down cycle. Once the cycle is complete the heater will
switch off completely.
Ventilator Mode

Only functional on heaters equipped with Air-Tronic Mini-Controller

Circulates non-heated air through compartment
Power on by pressing Ventilator Button
Power off by pressing the Switch Off Button
Note: When in ventilator mode the Blue LED Operation indicator will be lit.
Important Notes
•
Heaters installed in Peterbilt tractors are wired through LVD
(Low Voltage Disconnect) which will prevent heater from
draining battery

Heaters installed in tractors other than Peterbilt have been
hardwired and can be used in any key position
–
–
•
Switch must be in accessory or on position to use
Be aware of Voltage as the heater will shut down when the system
reaches 10.5 volts
NOTE: 10.5 volts will not be enough to restart your truck.
Be aware of fuel level before using your heater as the fuel
pickup tube does not fully extend into tank, it is 2” from the
bottom of the tank

Reduces likelihood of picking up debris in fuel tank
Prevents the heater from running truck completely out of fuel
Important Notes, cont…
•
Heater MUST be switched off while any fuel tank on vehicle is
being filled
•
Heated air for cabin does not pass through the combustion
chamber
•
Make sure intake vent is not obstructed, obstruction will cause
the heater to overheat
•
Make sure air outlet is not obstructed, obstruction will cause the
heater to overheat
•
If heater fails to perform, turn the heater off, wait several
seconds then turn heater back on. This resets the unit after a
fault cut off.
Summary
• Provides compartment comfort while
reducing idling hours.
• Two types of controllers:
– Mini-Controller
– Rotary
• Remain alert to fuel level and voltage.
You MUST be aware of the
type of fuel that you
engine requires.
ULSD fuel pumps are clearly
marked. It is a violation of
company policy, and it is illegal to
put any type of fuel other than
ULSD approved fuel in an engine
that requires that type of fuel.
You will find the type of
fuel requirement for your
tractor on the dash and/or
around the fuel tank area.
The USX Fuel Router DOES NOT take into
account the type of fuel required for your
tractor; therefore, if your tractor requires
ULSD fuel and you are routed to a fuel
stop that does not have that type of fuel
you must contact your Fleet Manager or
the fuel desk for an alternate fuel stop.
2010 emission engines require diesel
exhaust fluid, with the exception of
international Maxforce engines.
DEF Reserve Tank
DO NOT put DEF in the
diesel tank. DO NOT put
diesel or any winter fuel
additives in the DEF
tank. Any of these can
cause severe engine
damage, if the engine is
started.
If for any reason the
wrong type fluid is put
into the wrong tank DO
DOT start the vehicle.
The DEF consumption
rate is around 3% of
your fuel consumption.
Therefore, for every
100 gallons of diesel,
you will need 3 gallons
of DEF
Always top off your DEF
tank when you are at a
terminal. It is where we
get our DEF the
cheapest.
DEF Reserve Tank
Top off your DEF tank at Pilot, Flying J, and
Love’s locations that have DEF at the
pump
Avoid buying bottled DEF unless it is your
only option. It is the most expensive form
of DEF.
Average price for a 2.5 gallon bottle of
DEF=$13.99
$13.99/ 2.5 gallons=$5.596 per gallon
of bottled DEF

Pre-Trip/Post-Trip Inspections
Pre/Post
trips
• Quality pre-trip/post-trip
inspections cut down on
maintenance related
costs and operational
down-time by identifying
issues before they result
in an over-the-road
breakdown.
• Over-the-road
breakdowns result in
more costly repairs, than
servicing the unit at a
terminal or established
dealer location, to
include towing costs.
Always insure that you perform complete, thorough pre-trip
inspections of both you tractor and trailer – paying close attention to
the following area:
•Oil Reservoir (the 1st indicator mark on the “dip-stick” shows the tractor is 1 gallon low
on oil)
•DO NOT put any oil or anti-freeze in any containers other than original packaging.
•Ensure that you “post-trip” all trailers that you are dropping. Inform the shop or
breakdown of any problems discovered through the vehicle inspection report.
You must complete the pre-trip on the back of your
log book every day in accordance with FMCSA.
• Only check the items which have defects.
Another very important item to
be checked during your pre-trip is
“water” in your air tank. Always
take the time to drain the water
from your air tank.
To keep your equipment
operating safely and prevent
breakdowns ensure that you
drain your air tanks by pulling on
pull cords during your pre-trip
inspection.
Having water in your air tank can
damage the air tank and lines.
This also often voids the warranty
on the parts.
Fuel Filters
Fuel Filters
• During your pre-trip inspection,
inspect the fuel filter for leakage. If
you observe that the fuel filter is
leaking notify breakdown
immediately. Failing to do this
results in over-the-road replacement
of fuel filters, which is more costly.
Suspension Airbags
Airbags
Airbags create a unique user error
problem for many drivers, wherein they
are unable to get the tractor under the
trailer due to failing to drop the air in
the airbags . Breakdown takes many
calls each day wherein a trailer has been
dropped with the landing gear lowered
too low. Instead of the driver dropping
the air in the airbag to get under the
trailer a call is often made to
breakdown, which results in a costly
road service call.
Some tractors are equipped with
automatic dump valves, so always pull
out slowly from the trailer.
Tire Failure can be prevented
through proper pre-trip and posttrip inspections.
• Carefully inspect tires for inflation, damage,
cuts, gouges, etc.
• Your tread depth must be 2/32 or greater. A
good rule of thumb in checking this is to
stick a penny upside down into the tread. If
you can’t see the top of “Lincoln’s” head
then you don’t have the required tread
depth.
• If you don’t have the required tread depth
or you have any tire damage/under-inflation
issue send the macro or if at a USX terminal
see the shop personnel.
• Fully inspect the truck for any damage such
as, Broken Windshield, Dirty, Missing Items
(Cabinets), etc.
• Report any damage to shop personnel,
terminal manager, or your fleet manager
before you sign for the truck.
• In the event that you leave the terminal to
pick up a truck at another location, and you
find it damaged or dirty return it to the
terminal to be cleaned, repaired, and
sanitized before you sign for the truck.
When you are
assigned to a
truck:
Problems starting the tractor???
• Check that the battery disconnect isn’t in the off
position.
• Failing to follow the correct shut-down procedures
can create problems when you attempt to start the
tractor.
• NEVER stop and “set” the brakes before putting the
tractor in neutral. Doing so “torque locks” the
transmission, which prevents the tractor from
starting after shut down.
• ALWAYS place the tractor in NEUTRAL prior to setting
the brakes, and then complete the shut down.

equipment that you are not familiar with, contact
breakdown, or if at a shop go to the service desk
for assistance: Contact information is located in
the driver manual.
