The National Safety Council reports
that a fatal home injury occurs every
18 minutes and a disabling home
injury occurs every 4 seconds.
There are 2 types of injuries:
1.
Unintentional injury is a n injury resulting
from an unexpected event, or accident.
2.
Intentional injury is the result of a
deliberate attempt to cause harm.
The Accident Chain
A sequence of events that
leads to an unintentional
injury.

– the unsafe act or habit.

– the result or consequence of the risk factor.
• The Aftermath
– Ex. falls; have a broken arm.
Falls
• Leading cause of
accidental death for
the elderly.
• Bathtubs & Showers
– safety rails & nonskid
mats
• No Makeshift Ladders
– ex. chairs, boxes, etc…
– should use a step stool
•Keep floors clean
•Stairways well lit and free of
clutter.
Poisons ________ Kitchen, bathroom,
basement, or garage.
Lock away from children.
NEVER rebottle or
repackage products.
Ipecac Syrup
ONLY with doctor approval.
Electric Shock
• Electrocution
– death resulting from
passage through the
body of a high voltage
current.
• Kills about 1,000
people each year.
• Starts 150,000 fires
Preventing Electric Shock
• Unplug immediately if any unusual noises
come from the appliance
• Inspect cords
– cracking or frayed cords - replace immediately
• Pull the plug not the cord
• Never use an appliance or power tool if
your body, clothing, or floor is wet.
• Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.
Firearm Safety
• Never point a firearm at anyone for any
reason.
• Treat all firearms as if they were loaded.
• Store firearms unloaded, and store the
ammunition separately. Both should be
locked in a cabinet and away from children.
Fire
• 3 Elements
– fuel, heat, and air
• Heat Sources
– match, electrical wire, cigarette, faulty heater
• Clothing
– children’s sleepwear up to size 14 MUST be
flame resistant.

– easily set on fire
• Inflammable
– capable of being on
fire
• Fire-Proof
– totally or almost
unburnable
• Flame-Retardant
– not subject to quick or
easy burning (treated
with chemicals)
• Flame-Proof
– resisting the effects of
flames; not readily
ignited or burned by
flames.
Fire Prevention Devices
• Smoke Detector
• An alarm that is triggered by the
presence of smoke.
– needed on every level of the house.
• Fire Extinguisher
• A portable device that puts out small
fires by ejecting fire-extinguishing
chemicals.
– A, B, and C types of extinguishers.
– Use properly - point at base of fire

• Plan an escape route.
