PLC/J1708 Adapter Indicator LED’s
When the Adapter is in "Tractor (Listen)
Mode" or when being used for PLC
Diagnostics, the ABS Lamp LED Indicates
that the Adapter has Received a Trailer
ABS Fault Message (MID 10). In these
Modes The ABS Lamp Shadows the InCab Fault Lamp.
The Power LED Indicates Sufficient
Power for the Adapter (9-16 Volts).
Wednesday, June 13, 2001
The J1708 LED Indicates Traffic on the
J1708 Data Bus. This Occurs When the
Adapter is Being Used in Hand-Held
Mode or When Used as a J1708/J1587
Diagnostic Adapter
The PLC LED Indicates Traffic on the
PLC Data Bus. This Occurs When the
Adapter is Being Used in Hand-Held
Mode or When Used as a PLC
Diagnostics Adapter

S.12 Care and Use Requirements for PLC4TRUCKS
5
Steps for Diagnosing the Tractor PLC Network
Pre-Check – Confirm Sufficient Voltage to Components and that
the Tractor ABS Supports PLC4TRUCKS
Step 1 – Connect PLC/J1708 Adapter to Tractor J560 Cord in
“Trailer Mode”
• The In-Cab Fault Light Should Cycle On/Off at a 5 Second Interval
»If the in-cab fault light cycled on/off, you are done.
»If the in-cab fault light failed to cycle on/off, proceed to step 2.

at the Tractor ABS ECU in “Trailer Mode”
• The In-Cab Fault Light Should Cycle On/Off at a 5 Second Interval
»If the in-cab fault light failed to cycle on/off, the ABS ECU is not
responding to PLC messages or the in-cab ABS Fault Lamp is not
working. Proceed to step 3.
»If the in-cab fault light cycled on/off, there is a tractor wiring problem.
Repair according to tractor repair manual. You are done.
Step 3 – Connect the PLC/J1708 Adapter to the In-Cab
Diagnostics Connector and Run Tractor ABS Diagnostics.
• You are done.

Diagnosing The Trailer PLC Network
Pre-Check – Confirm You are Using an Approved Power Supply*, You
Have Sufficient Voltage to All Components and that the Trailer ABS
Supports PLC4TRUCKS
Step 1 – Connect Power Supply to the PLC/J1708 Adapter in “Tractor
Mode” and To the Trailer Nosebox
• The PLC and J1708 LED’s Should Flash Indicating that the Trailer ABS has
PLC4TRUCKS Capability and it is Functioning Normally.
»If the LED’s flash and the “ABS Lamp” doesn’t light, you are done.
»If the LED’s do not flash at all, proceed to step 2.
»If the LED’s flash and the “ABS Lamp” LED lights, there is a Trailer ABS fault.
Proceed to step 3.
• *Consult Your Trailer ABS Manufacturer

Diagnosing The Trailer PLC Network
Step 2 – Connect Power Supply to Nosebox and Connect
PLC/J1708 Adapter at the Trailer ABS ECU in “Tractor Mode”
»If PLC and J1708 LED’s flash, there is a trailer wiring problem. Fix
according to trailer repair manual. You are done.
»If PLC and J1708 LED’s do not flash, the Trailer ABS ECU is not
transmitting PLC Messages. Repair according to the trailer ABS Repair
manual. You are done.
Step 3 – Time to Launch Trailer ABS PLC Diagnostics
• Trailer ABS Units Supporting PLC Diagnostics
»Diagnostics at the Nose Box
»Diagnostics at the ECU Connector
* Check with ABS manufacturer on which ECU’s support PLC diagnostics
