TEMP POWER PRODUCTS
Temp Power
Temporary Power Products are any devices used to control electrical energy for short term durations and are
not part of a building’s PERMANENT Electrical system.
These devices can include: Electrical Extension Cords, Electrical “Panels”, Electrical Voltage Transformers and a
variety of connection electrical devices.

AC vs DC Voltage
AC or Alternating Current is
generator created.

DC or Direct Current is created by
Battery or AC/DC power supply.
Tools, motors, pumps, light bulbs, switches,
fuses, circuit breakers are all rated or DESIGNED
to operate at a given voltage or range of voltages

Motors to light bulbs require or PULL a certain
amount of amps through the cord.
Amps are added on a circuit and called the
“load”.
Household
Jobsite
100 Watt Light bulb – 1.5 amps
Drill or grinder – 5 to 18 amps
Electric Range – 50 amps
Stringlight – 10 to 18 amps

The basic count of hot lines in a single circuit.
1 Phase 120V = 1 Hot , 1 neutral & 1 safety ground
1 Phase 240V = 2 Hots, 1 neutral & 1 safety ground
3 Phase 208V = 3 Hots, 1 neutral & 1 safety ground
3 Phase 480V = 3 hots & 1 Neutral/Ground Bonded

Electric circuits require a hot and return (neutral)
side to complete the circuit or loop.

Temp Power
Rule: Electric wires (conductors) are sized or
rated to carry a maximum amperage or current.
Amp chart is NEC 400 – wire sizing
#14 awg = 15 amps
#12 awg = 20 amps
#10 awg = 30 amps
# 6 awg = 50 amps
Note: Wire “size” goes
down as physical wire
gets larger and can carry
more amps
Temp Power
Rule: Too much current ( amps ) can burn up circuits –
fire hazard.

CODE RULE:
Circuit Breakers or Fuses must be
rated for the smallest rated
part of the circuit.
Temp Power
Protection
Circuit Breakers protect equipment and wiring.
- NOT a life safety device!
- Rated in full amps ( 15, 20, 30, 50 etc)
- Must be on all branch circuits
- Must be rated correctly
- Does not do the same job as a GFCI
Temp Power

GFCIs protect people.
- Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
- Quick life saving device
- Sensitive to poor connections, cheap cordage, moisture

Transform vs Distribution
Transforming Power
480 or 600 volts is available at site.
Tools can’t run on “commercial power” levels.
The voltage requires transforming to reach 240, 208 or
120 volt ranges.

Jobsite Problem:
How do you run a tool rated at 120 Volts if only
480 Volts are available?
Answer: Transform the power to 120V.
Transformers either step up or step down voltage
based on the design.

Temp Power
Basic Rule:
3 Phase input into a transformer derives 3 phase
output. 1 Phase input derives 1 phase output.
480V 3 phase INPUT = 120/208V 3 phase OUTPUT
480V 1 phase INPUT = 240V 1 Phase OUTPUT
Temp Power
Size Matters:
Transformers are rated in KVA – this is the size
rating as to the amount of amps they can
produce.
Every 15 KVA = Max of (6) 20 amp 120 V circuits
Temp Power
How to determine the right Temp Power Product
Step 1 – Determine the NEED
( Distribute or Transform)
Step 2 – Determine the AVAILABLE POWER
- Volts Amps Phase
Step 3 – Determine the
EXPECTED ELECTRICAL OUTPUT

How to determine - con’t
Step 4 – Determine the CONNECTIONS
How will they connect in and out
Be specific
Use NEMA values
Volts amps phase
Step 5 – Determine the BUDGET
