LUTHER’S SCANDALOUS NATURE AND THE PRIMACY OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Luther: “It is impossible for me to recant unless I am proved to be
wrong by the testimony of Scripture (sola Scriptoria). My conscience is
bound to the Word of God” (Essentials of Evangelical Theology, Vol. I, p51).
Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man
should boast.”
James 2:19-20, 24, 26: “But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is
dead? … Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only …
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
Luther (salvation by Faith Alone … No Works):
“I care not if thou bring a thousand places of the Scripture for the
righteousness of works as against the righteousness of faith, and
cry out never so much that the Scripture is against me. I have the
Author and Lord of the Scripture with me, and on whose side I will
rather stand than believe thee… When our opponents interpret
the scriptures against Christ, we are prepared to hold fast to Christ
against scripture” (Essentials of Evangelical Theology, Vol. I, p66)
