Autonomy
The Relationship Between
Morality and Religion
Autonomy
• If you are ‘autonomous’ you decide for yourself
• Autonomy in society is restricted by the law and
what is considered socially acceptable
• Autonomous moral values are decided with no
reference to religion
• Moral values are based on experience and reason
• You might agree of rational grounds with what a
religion says, but usually autonomous moral
principles do not use religion.
• Utilitarianism (Greatest good for the greatest
number) is an autonomous moral principle.
