Geography of Amos
Bible Study – Book of Amos
Purpose For The Book:
1.
To describe how the Lord will not only
come to judge the nations for their
evil, but will also come to judge Israel for
her breach of covenant
2.
To expose Israel's breach of covenant
through their social oppression of the
people, empty religious ritual, and
arrogant self-confidence
3.
To proclaim a time of restoration and
blessing after judgment under a
revitalized Davidic dynasty
Bible Study – Book of Amos
Three Components
1.
2.
3.
The judgment of Israel's neighbors for
their sin: Damascus (Syria today), Gaza
(the "Palestinians" today), Tyre (Lebanon
today), Ammon and Moab (Jordan today)
(Amos 1-2)
The spiritual corruption of Judah and
Israel (Amos 2-6)
Five prophetic visions: Locusts and Fire,
Warn of impending catastrophe against
the sinful nation, Overthrow / Ruin of
Israel and future restoration of Israel
after the coming of the Messiah
Lessons From Amos
1.
The moral responsibility of God, Who is
not only all-powerful and international,
but also ethical and spiritual.
2.
The most elaborate worship, if insincere,
is but an insult to God. Religion is more
than mere outward worship. It is not the
smoke of the burnt offering that is
acceptable to God, but the incense of a
true and loyal heart.
There must be social justice among men.
Morality was the one necessity for Israel.
God's requirements are always moral.
Moral issues determine the course of
history. His whole message is a fitting
prelude to James' definition of religion.
(James 1:27)
3.
Lessons From Amos
4.
Privilege involves responsibility. (Amos
3:2) Election to privilege is only another
name for election to duty.
5.
The meaning and purpose of calamity
and trouble. (Amos 4:6). Every disaster
is but a new call to repentance.
6.
The necessity of personal conviction in a
prophet. (7:14, 15) Religion is a personal
matter; likewise conviction; they cannot
be inherited.
