For the Puritans- everyday world &
spiritual world were closely
intertwined


Valued thrift, hard work, & selfsufficiency
Wished to return to simpler forms of
worship & church organization

Demanded strict conformity

Society governed by Bible

Worked together for the common good

Viewed life as individual journey to
salvation
Bible provided model for writing
 Favored plain style of writing
 Clarity of expression
 Uncomplicated sentences
 Common speech; everyday language

