‘Ethical language is meaningless’ Discuss.
There is much ethical debate about ethical statements
and whether they are reliable or not and ethicists have
developed theories that enable us to assess religious
language and state whether it is meaningful or not. Some
of these theories suggest that religious language is
emotion, however others such as naturalism assert that
religious language is more factual.
Candidate A
It’s waffle
It doesn’t actually tell us
anything
Ethical language is based on moral truth and is
therefore, entirely meaningful. If not for society as
a whole then certainly for individuals. In discussion
of this bold statement, it is necessary to consider
the theories of Ethical Naturalism and Intuitionism
making clear their obvious strengths, whilst
addressing their apparent weaknesses. The non –
cognitivist approaches of emotivism and
prescriptivism will also be considered in light of
whether these present a serious challenge to our
opening statement.
Candidate B
• Critically assess, with reference to William
James, the argument from religious
experience. (35)
• Evaluate the claim that corporate religious
experience is no more than an illusion. (35)
• To what extent can God reveal himself
through sacred writings? (35)
