“The weather is changing,
leaves are falling from the trees,
it’s getting darker…”
Junior World
Autumn Arrives
Here is a snap shot of the last few weeks activities and learning in
the ELC room. The children took part in Halloween celebrations,
then learned about Diwali, Festival of Light and this week have
become aware of how certain celebrations/customs are linked to
the past and the wearing of ‘poppies’ is about remembering.
Pattern and Print
We used a variety of
materials and our
hands to create
patterns and images
of autumn
The children are aware of
the changing colours in
Autumn and that cold and
dark weather stops things
from growing
Colder weather doesn't
stop us from having
fun outdoors. Some
running around to
warm up, developing
throwing,catching and
kicking skills and a
little balancing being
achieved.
Halloween has
given the children
opportunities to
learn about why
we celebrate
different festivals
Displays developing
with the children’s
art work. Lots of
opportunity for mark
making and
creativity
Megan’s magic make up
Even in this simple
activity the children are
developing social skills,
turn taking and lots of
patience involved
In order to ensure that all the children were
happy about attending the Halloween Party
and were not afraid of ghoulish costumes
our theme this year was “Witches and
Wizards.”
Party hats and pumpkins
Designing some
hats for the party
involved some of
the children
learning to explore
how to construct
models.
Pumpkins offered much
exploratory play,
developing co-ordination,
motor skills and lots of
listening and talking
skills
Good old fashioned
messy play !!
Making and
baking biscuits
allowed for some
numeracy skills to
be developed
Snack was a special treat with children’s
decorations proudly displayed.
Witches and Wizards all partied out !!
The children then had
the opportunity to
learn about another
Festival. In order to
help develop their
understanding we
used the lap top to
find out more
information. We then
chose to make our
own candle holders.
These would brighten
up any dark night, well
done boys and girls
One of the children wanted to know why
some people were wearing red flowers ?
The staff took the children out into the
community to discover more about
‘Remembrance’ Day and with lots of
discussions have helped them to
become more aware of why many
customs are linked to past events.
More learning took place and
linked to many areas of the
curriculum. Literacy,
Expressive Arts, Numeracy
and Maths and Social Studies.
The children even
managed to involve
Alex in developing her
sense of ‘wellbeing’
when she proudly
wore one of the
children’s poppies.
