Planting

•
Need full sun, 6 hours per day
Soil that is deep, 3 feet
Good drainage
Soil needs to be well cultivated, roots will not penetrate tough
soil
• The hole should be twice as wide as the root, but only as deep
Planting
• Cut any roots that are broken or kinked
• If your tree was in a pot before planting, gently spread the
roots out
• Refill hole with excavated soil
• Once planted the upper most root should lie just below the
soil line
Irrigation
• All new trees should be watered thoroughly to settle soil
• Fruit tree watering rings work very well
Irrigation
• The ground within 3 feet of the trunk should be kept free of
weeds, grass or other plants that will compete for nutrients
and water
• Mulch or wood chips help with this
• First year trees do not need much more water until it warms
up
Pollination
• Strawberries, raspberries, peaches, cherries, grapes are self
pollinating
• Apples, pears, plums, apricots are not
• Blueberry plants are self pollinating but cross pollination
makes larger fruit
• Trees within 100 feet count as pollinators
Pruning
• Why do you need to prune?
• Pruning should be done in the dormant season
• After leaves have fallen in the fall, but before new growth in
the spring
• Do not over prune, when in doubt, leave it
