Taiga, Tundra, Deserts,
and Grasslands
By Colleen Funck
What is a Biome?
• A biome is large geographic areas that are
similar in climate that have similar types of
plants and animals.
How many
Biomes are there?
• There are 6 land biomes.

–
Taiga
Tundra
Desert
Grassland
Temperate Forest
Tropical Forest
• There are 2 water biomes.
– Marine
– Freshwater
Climate
• Climate is very important to biomes.
• It can determine the amount of rainfall and
the temperature.
• Climate can also affect abiotic factors:
– Soil
– Water
– Temperature

The Taiga
• The taiga has long cold winters and short cool
summers.
• The taiga has coniferous trees
– These trees have leaves like needles.
– They also produce food all year long.
• The ground is cold.
• Things take a long time to
decompose because it is cold.

• True or False: The taiga has long hot
summers and short cool winters.
– True
– False

cool summers.

Great Job!
• The taiga does have long cold winters and
short cool summers.

The Tundra
• The tundra also has long cold winters and
short cool summers.
• The tundra gets little precipitation.
• Everything is wet because it is so cold that
nothing can evaporate.

Permafrost
• Permafrost is a deep layer of frozen soil.
• This makes it difficult for trees to take root in
the tundra.

Way to Go!
• You were right! Permafrost is a deep layer of
frozen solid.

Permafrost does not melt.

Almost!
Permafrost is not thin.

Try Again!
Permafrost is not on top of the soil, it is under
it.

Desert
•
•
•
•
The deserts are found in the middle latitudes.
There is not enough rainfall to support trees.
Deserts could be cold or hot.
The soil is dry.

Grasslands
• Grasslands have moderate rainfall.
• They are not able to support trees.
• Summers are very hot, but winters are very
cold.
• Wildfires are common.
