Complementary Vs Alternative
Many Americans use healthcare approaches developed outside of mainstream Western or
Conventional Medicine, and many use non-mainstream approaches along with
conventional treatments.
Complementary, when a non mainstream practice is used together with
conventional medicine.
Alternative, when a non mainstream practice is used in place of
conventional medicine.
Integrated health, the incorporation of complementary approaches into
mainstream healthcare.

Types of Complementary Health Approaches

Vitamins Herbs or Natural Supplements
When making the decision to supplement your diet with
Minerals, Vitamins, or Herb supplements, make sure to do your
homework. It may be a wise decision that provides health
benefits. Many products may be unnecessary for good health or
may create unexpected risks.
Tips on searching the Web for Information on Supplementation
•
Use directory sites of respected organizations: look for who operates the site,
Govt. University, or a reputable medical or health organization.
•
What is the purpose of the site: to educate or to sell a product.
•
What is the source of the information: are there references, is the information
current?
The number of Americans who use complementary and alternative
medicine continues to raise

and assist in relaxation

support, the prevention of colds
Chamomile: helps to relieve stress
and to promote relaxation. Tea is
an anti-inflammatory used to treat
insomnia
Vitamins & Minerals
• Calcium & Vitamin D for bone
health.
• Fish oil/omega 3 : for heart health
• Probiotics for digestive health
• Multivitamins: for overall health
• St Johns Wort: for mood problems
If you take, or are considering taking, dietary supplements
for your health make sure to tell your healthcare providers
They can do a better job caring for you if they know what
supplements you are taking
