Earth’s Land Biomes!
Land Biomes!
Around the World!
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Temperate = moderate temperature, not extreme
Deciduous = “falling off” in Latin.
Adaptations: Tree leaves fall off in winter to save
water, trees have thick bark to protect against cold
winters.
Coniferous Forest
Conifers = pinetrees!
Adaptation: Trees have needles with a waxy coating. Waxy
coating keeps trees from drying out, protects needles from
winter damage, and allow trees to shed snow more easily
than deciduous tree leaves
Tropical Rain Forest
Has most biodiversity – 100 different kind of trees in one
quarter of a football field!
Most animals live in canopy (treetops)
Adaptations: Trees’ roots grow above ground for extra
support in soil
Adaptation: Some plants grow on others to reach the
sunlight!
Temperate Grassland
Few to no trees! Not enough water, too many fires and animals
eat everything.
Adaptation: Prairie shrubs easily resprout after fire.
Adaptation: Some prairie trees have thick bark to protect
against fire
Savanna
Like a prairie, but with some scattered trees.
Adaptation: In dry season, tops of grasses turn yellow and die,
but grasses’ deep roots survive many months without water!
Desert
Is very hot and dry, but has many plants and animals.
Adaptation: Most animals are active at night when it’s cooler
Adaptation: Plants grow far apart so they don’t compete with
each other for water.
Adaptation: Cacti have fleshy stems and leaves that store water
and prevent water loss.
Tundra
Is very cold and has little rainfall.
Plants are very small due to lack of
nutrients and roots cannot penetrate permafrost
Adaptations: Plants grow close together to
keep warmer
Adaptation: Some plants have hair to keep
warm
POLAR vs. ALPINE
