Photosynthesis

1.
2.
Lesson Objectives:
Describe how substances needed for
photosynthesis enter and leave leaves
Explain how leaves are adapted for
photosynthesis
Starter
Can you remember the word and symbol equation
for photosynthesis?

On your table – on the scrap paper – spider
diagram Photosynthesis

Write down ANY words you would associate
with photosynthesis

Glucose
 Soluble so can be transported around the plant




dissolved in water
Can be made into insoluble starch which can be
stored inside cells and used later
Can be converted into cellulose used in call walls
Can be converted to proteins
Can be made into fats and oils

Chlorophyll is green

During winter plants absorb the chlorophyll
from the leaves so they can drop the leaves
but not loose the chlorophyll.

Because the chlorophyll has been absorbed
the leaves change colour





Large surface area to absorb light
Thin so gasses don’t have far to diffuse
Containing chlorophyll
Network of veins to transport water and
sugars
Having stomata to allow gasses to diffuse in
and out

1. How does water get into leaves

2. Adapted leaves

(1o minutes at each activity then class
discussion)
You should now be able to....
1. Describe how substances needed for
photosynthesis enter and leave leaves
2. Explain how leaves are adapted for
photosynthesis


Gardeners like plants with variegated leaves.

How might these plants be at a disadvantage
to other garden plants?
