 All countries in the world have been engaged in
developing new and renewable sources of alternative
energy in recent years.
 But now the cultivation of the crops for biological fuel
requires to occupy huge amounts of agricultural land,
and excessive using crops as biological fuel will bring
about a series of other issues.
 The prospect of using the vast desert space and the
desert plants is bright
“The king of desert plants” --- Haloxylon ammodendron
1.Morphological Feature
 a kind of fasciculate shrub ,3-8metres high
 with scalelike leaves.
2.Biological characteristics
 Photophilous
 Strong drought resistance
 Salt resistance
It can not only grow in arid barren desert area,
but also on middle or light degree salinized soil
3.Application Value
 Sand control and wind prevent
 Economic value
Cistanche Deserticola
There are many lateral roots,
on which one plant parasitize,
named Cistanche Deserticola
It is precious Chinese herbal
medicine and has economic
value
Chinese herbal medicine
4. Planting Method
 Sow the seeds
 Transplant young seedlings
Sandy soil with mild salinization or fine sand soil
should be chose to cultivate the young plant
“Guardian of the desert” --- Nitraria sibirica
1.Morphological Feature
 It is a kind of perennial small bush
with many branches,1-2metres
high
 The short branches often
degenerate into acicular shape.
2.Biological characteristics
 Strong adaptability
 Drought resistance
 salt endurance
 Cold resistance
3.Application Value
It has many good economic and ecological
benefits
 It is a good choice for greening and urban landscape
in Saline District
 The fruit with juicy flesh is edible and can be used to
make vinegar and wine
 The fruit can also cure some diseases
 The stone can be used to extract oil
4. Planting Method
 Sow the seeds
 cuttage
It produces offshoots near the ground, which can be cut
from the mother plant and be cultivated into an
independent plant.
When large amount of the young seedlings are needed, the
cuttage can be used.
“The North oleic Camellia of China” ---Shinyleaf Yellowhorn
1.Morphological Feature
 Deciduous shrubs or small arbor, 5meter high
2.Biological characteristics
 Photophilous tree species
 Strong adaptability
 Drought tolerant
3.Application Value
The oil content of the Shinyleaf Yellowhorn seed is amounted to 50%-70%,And
that of the stone is 72%,the amout is more than one time as much as the
rapeseed
 Extract diesel oil
The biennial breedding variety has about 200 kg seeds per mu,
while the high-yield cultivation can produce 2000-2500kg seeds
per mu which can be calculated to 700-1000 kg or more biodiesel.
3.Application Value
 Extract edible oil
The oil can be used for the prevention and treatment of hypertensio
high cholesterol and other diseases
4. Planting Method
 sow the seeds
The sowing time is spring and autumn.
Sows the seeds directly.
Summary
 The desert is gigantic resource for the vast space and the
plants that hasn’t been utilized.
How to make full use of it is worth studying.
 Cultivating the desert plant is killing several birds with
one stone
 It will be more helpful for the desert plant cultivation by
using the modern advanced network technology and
sensor technology.
