Lesson 27
What are the parts of a
flower?
A botanical garden
is a place where you
can see many
different kinds of
plants and many
beautiful flowers.
Not all plants have flowers.
In the plants that do have
flowers, the flower is the
organ of sexual
reproduction.
A flower makes a plant’s sex
cells, or gametes.
Male and female gametes join to
produce seeds. Each seed may
grow into a new plant.
What may grow if
we plant these
seeds?
What may grow if we
plant these seeds?
Like the human body, flowers
are made of different parts,
called organs.
The organs and their jobs are:
Sepal – leaves found
at the bottom of the
flower, they protect the
flower bud.
Petals – colorful
leaves that protect the
reproductive organs.
Stamen – are the
male reproductive
organs. They make
pollen.
Most flowers have many stamen.
The stamen are made of two
parts.
Anther – is the top part
of the stamen, where the
pollen is made.
Filament – holds up
the anther.
Pistil – is the
female organ of the
flower. It makes
eggs.
The pistil has many parts.
Ovary is the bulging
part of the pistil.
Ovules – inside the
ovary, they house
the eggs.
Fertilization takes
place here.
The pollen reaches the egg in
the ovary. What should the egg
become?
