PLANTS BREATHE
THE PROCESSES OF TRANSPIRATION
AND RESPIRATION

Plants Breathe
Plants and animals are
very similar. We all
need air, water and
food. Plants don’t
have mouths so they
make their own food
through the process
of photosynthesis.

Plants Breathe
They don’t have
lungs as do many
large animals.
Instead, they
release gases and
moisture through
microscopic pores.
Breathing is
necessary for the
survival of both
plants and animals.

Plants Use Oxygen –
The Process of Respiration
During the day
sunlight allows
sugar forming
photosynthesis
to build up
oxygen and
inflate the plant.

Plants Live and Breathe
Some of the oxygen is
released into the air
or surrounding water.
This is why we say
plants "breathe in"
carbon dioxide and
"breathe out" oxygen.
The reaction only
occurs if both
chlorophyll and
sunlight are present.

Plants Live and Breathe
Throughout the night
the plant will use the
stored oxygen to
break up sugars and
release carbon dioxide
into the air or water.
This process is called
respiration.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
Transpiration is a
process that
provides all parts
of a plant with
water and minerals.
Think of it as the
plant’s plumbing
system.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
The plant absorbs
moisture and
minerals through
the roots. Water
moistens and cools
the entire plant as
it is absorbed or as
it rises up from the
roots through the
stem.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
Moisture swells
out to the leaves
and escapes from
the tiny breathing
pores, stomata,
when they are
open for
photosynthesis.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
Because water
evaporates from
the leaves during
photosynthesis
it’s necessary for
the plant to have a
good source of
moisture in its
environment or at
its roots.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
Transpiration
provides moisture
and nutrients to help
keep the plant
healthy and strong
enough to
photosynthesize,
grow and reproduce.

Plants Use Water –
The Process of Transpiration
With just the right
amounts of sunlight,
warmth, water and
adaptations, plants
thrive, grow and
multiply.

Plants Breathe
Living and breathing plants contribute
so much to our lives. They provide fresh
air, food and fabrics.

Plants Breathe
Plants contribute to the
water cycle as moisture
evaporates from their
leaves. Released water
vapors rise into the
atmosphere, form
clouds, and return to
Earth as rain. This water
cycle provides all living
things with life-giving
moisture.

Plants Breathe
Plants keep the
Earth alive with
beauty, color,
nutrition and
comfort.
