Making Shale
Lesson #35
Quick Write: Get the sandstone you made, and create
two T-charts as shown. Compare the rocks and
complete the T-charts. Include comparisons of grain
size, grain shape, and packing density.

Today’s Plan:
-Compare rocks
-Sandstone formation
-Making Shale
-Shale formation and geology principles
-Brainstorm end of the trimester projects

Period 1: Grand Canyon Model
Question 5
Which came first the Grand Canyon, Colorado River, or
Colorado Plateau?

Lesson #35
Sandstone Formation
 Deposition; loosely packed sand
 Over a long period of time sand is compacted
 Water containing matrix materials enters sand
 Over a long period of time water evaporates
and sand cements into sandstone.

Lesson #35
Shale
The shale from the Grand Canyon is black and
contains fossils of plants, but our shale is white.
What conditions might make dark shale with leaf
fossils?

Lesson #35
Formation of Shale
• Clay and silt size particles are deposited in
areas of slow moving water.
• Leaves and other remains of plants and animals
may get buried in the mud.
• Over time, the pressure of overlying sediments
may squeeze the water out of the mud and
form shale.

Lesson #35
Geological Principles
The Principle Of Original Horizontality
• Layers of sediments are generally
deposited in a horizontal or nearly
horizontal position.
• Each new layer forms a new horizontal
layer on top of the layers below.

Geological Principles
The Principle of Uniformitarianism
The present is the key to the past.
Geologists use current observations,
about processes happening today, to infer
about events that happened in the past.
Earth History Test
• Retakes:
– Study (download notes or use your journal)
– Make corrections
– Show me your corrections and set a retake time
(in the next two weeks)
