1. Making an observation
We always see some leaves fall down from
the trees, after several days, they become
yellowing.
If we do not give the plants water or
sunlight, it turns yellow after several days.
A lot of trees are cut down, but they did
not die.
p.1
2. Proposing a hypothesis
The plants cannot live without some systems.
Even there are water and light, the plants still cannot live
without roots.Maybe it is because the plants cannot absorb
water along.
Roots do not have chloroplasts so they cannot carry out
photosynthesis.

3. Doing an experiment
Materials:
1. 2 plants ( A & B )
2. 4 cups ( S,X,Y,Z)
3. Some water
4. Iodine solution
5. A knife
p.3
Procedure:
1.Put plant A and plant B in dark for 24 hours.
2.Then put plant A in cup S within water under the light. Plant
B cut 1 leaf, some roots and 1 stem and put them into cup X,
cup Y and cup Z within water under the light respectively for
several days.
3.After several days,take plant A out and cut 1 leaf,some roots
and 1 stem. Take plan B’s leaf, roots and stem out.
4.Finally drop some iodine solution to plant A and plant B’s
leaf,roots and stem respectively.
5.Observe the result.
p.4
4. Taking experimental results
Several days later, the leaf in cup X changed to yellowing leafs. The stem in
cup Z faded. The roots in cup Y,the plant A’s roots, stem and leaf were
unchanged.
After the iodine test, the leaf in cup X and the stem in cup Z changed brown
as they did not contain starch, that means they cannot do photosynthesis. The
roots in cup Y,plant A’s roots ,stem and leaf changed to dark blue as they
contained starch, that means they can do photosynthesis.
Destarching is putting the plants in dark for 24 hours. In this experiment,
destarching is to have an accurate result.Plant A is a control experiment.
p.5
5. Drawing a conclusion
The plants can do photosynthesis when there are carbon
dioxide, water and light, but without leaves, roots or stem,
they cannot. In plants, photosynthesis takes place in
chloroplasts. Leaves contain chlorophyll so that can carry
out photosynthesis. Roots absorb water and minerals, they
are important for plants. And water is transferred to the
leaf by stems. Plants are control by every system.
