This farmer works in the
Windward Islands in the
Caribbean.
This green fruit has
been growing on tall
plants for about twelve
months.

The farmer is picking big
bunches of the fruit.
What fruit is it?
What colour is it normally when we buy it?

Are bananas a healthy food?
This woman works in
Uganda.
She’s checking to see if
the berries on these
plants are ready to pick.
© Simon Rawles
The seeds inside the
berries – called beans –
will be washed, dried,
sorted, roasted, ground,
and then packaged.
Lots of people love to dissolve this product
in hot water to make a hot drink.

Do you like coffee?
How often do you drink it?
This woman works in
Mali.
She’s filling a basket
with white fibres that
grow around the seeds
of these plants.

The fibres will be spun
into thread, which is
used to make cloth.
Lots of your clothes, sheets and towels at home are
probably made out of this material.

Check the labels on your clothes to see
if any of them are made out of cotton.
This man works in
Malaysia.
He’s picking the leaves
from these long rows of
plants.
The leaves will be sold to
factories, where other
workers will dry and sort
them.

Then they’ll put the dried
leaves into boxes.
You can put these leaves – often inside little bags –
into hot water to make a very popular drink.
Some people have it with milk and sugar.

Does anyone in your family drink tea?
This man works in Brazil.
There are lots of fields like this
in Brazil. The plants can
measure up to six metres!
The man is cutting down the
stalks.
These stalks, or canes, will be
washed, chopped, shredded,
mixed with water and crushed
to release a juice.
This juice is used to make a very, very sweet food.
People add it to other foods to make them taste better.

He’s picking fruit from one
of the cacao trees on his

Then he’ll open the pods

chocolate?
This man is working up
a tree in Sri Lanka!
He’s climbing this palm
tree to reach the fruit at
the top of it.
Palm trees can
sometimes grow to be
over 20 metres tall.
It doesn’t look easy,
does it?

Have you ever eaten a coconut?
This farmer works in
England.
He’s driving a combine
harvester.
© 2008 Jupiterimages Corporation
First he sowed seeds in
the field, then he waited
for them to grow, and
now he’s harvesting
wheat.
Some of the foods that we can buy in shops
and supermarkets are made with wheat.
Can you think of one that lots of people eat
every day for lunch?

How much bread did you eat yesterday?
This woman works in
China.
She’s working in a field
called a ‘paddy field’.
The plants she’s
harvesting only grow
properly with lots of
water and hard work.

You can buy the food she’s harvesting in packets
and boil it in water. People often eat it with Chinese
food. What do you think it is?
