WEATHER AND CLIMATE REVIEW
WHAT ARE THE 4 COMPONENTS OF THE WATER
CYCLE?
• Condensation
• Precipitation
• Runoff
• Evaporation
1. the amount of water vapor in the air
2. the amount of water that is really in the air compared to how
much water the air can fold
What are the vocabulary words described in 1 & 2
1. HUMIDITY
2. RELATIVE HUMIDITY
HOW DOES TEMPERATURE AFFECT HUMIDITY?
The higher the temperature of the
air the more water the air can hold.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AIR REACHES ITS DEW
POINT?
• Condensation occurs
• Condensation is the change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Condensation
occurs when saturated air cools.(100% humidity) The dew point is the
temperature where condensation can occur. At its dew point, air is saturated
HOW ARE CLOUDS CLASSIFIED?
Clouds are classified based on form and altitude.
Cumulus - fluffy and often large. When they get too large, they can produce storms
Stratus – cover large areas and cause fog when they are near the ground
Cirrus – high feathery clouds, indicate change is coming.
Nimbo – prefix meaning rain
Thunderstorms would occur in cumulonimbus clouds.
HOW ARE CLOUDS CLASSIFIED?
WHAT ARE THE THREE FORMS OF CLOUDS? WHAT
KIND OF CLOUD WOULD A THUNDERSTORM FOR IN?
Clouds are classified based on
shape and altitude .
WHAT ARE THE THREE FORMS OF CLOUDS?
Cumulus - fluffy and often large. When they get too large, they can produce
storms
Stratus – cover large areas and cause fog when they are near the ground
Cirrus – high feathery clouds, indicate change is coming.
WHAT ARE THE WORD PARTS FOR LOW, MEDIUM
AND HIGH CLOUDS?
STRATO- LOW
ALTO- MIDDLE
CIRRO- HIGH
WHAT ARE THE 4 TYPES OF PRECIPITATION?
• Rain
• Snow
• Sleet
• Hail
WHAT IS BEING FORMED WHEN WATER DROPLETS IN THE
CLOUDS BECOME TOO LARGE FOR THE CLOUDS TO
HOLD (USUALLY 100 TIMES ITS ORIGINAL SIZE)?
RAIN
WHAT FORMS WHEN WATER VAPOR CHANGES DIRECTLY
TO A SOLID (CRYSTAL) IN THE CLOUDS--- DUE TO BELOW
FREEZING TEMPERATURES?
SNOW
WHAT FORMS WHEN RAIN FALLS THROUGH A LAYER OF
FREEZING AIR, CAUSING THE RAIN TO FREEZE ON THE
WAY DOWN.
SLEET
WHAT FORMS DURING A THUNDERSTORM: WHEN
UPDRAFTS CARRY RAIN UP INTO THE CLOUDS BEFORE IT
CAN COME DOWN, ICE PIECES FORMS. THE MORE
UPDRAFTS, THE LARGER THE ICE PIECES. EVENTUALLY THE
ICE PIECES FALLS TO THE EARTH.
HAIL
1. WHAT FRONT FORMS WHEN A COLD AIR MASS MEETS
A WARM AIR MASS. THE AIR MASSES REMAIN SEPARATE
AND OFTEN BRINGS DAYS OF CLOUDY OR RAINY
WEATHER?
2. WHAT FRONT FORMS WHERE WARM AIR MOVES OVER
COLD, DENSER AIR. THE WARM AIR GRADUALLY
REPLACES THE COLD AIR. DRIZZLY RAIN IS USUALLY
FOLLOWED BY CLEAR AND WARM WEATHER.
1.STATIONARY FRONT
2.WARM FRONT
1. WHAT FRONT FORMS WHEN A WARM AIR MASS IS
CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO COLDER AIR MASSES. COOL
TEMPERATURES OCCUR AND LARGE AMOUNTS OF RAIN
OR SNOW?
2. WHAT FRONT FORMS WHEN COLD AIR MOVES UNDER
WARM AIR, WHICH IS LESS DENSE, AND PUSHES WARM
AIR UP. THESE FRONTS MOVE QUICKLY AND CAUSE
THUNDERSTORMS, HEAVY RAIN, OR SNOW.

OCCLUDED FRONT
COLD FRONT
A _1._________IS AN AREA OF LOWER PRESSURE THAN
THE SURROUNDING AREAS AND HAS WINDS THAT SPIRAL
TOWARD THE CENTER.
A _2. __________IS AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE WHERE
AIR MOVES APART, OR DIVERGES, AND SINKS.
1.CYCLONE
2.ANTICYCLONE
1. – MEASURES AND INDICATES TEMPERATURE
2. - MEASURES ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
3. – AN INSTRUMENT USED TO MEASURE WIND SPEED
1.
2.
3.
THERMOMETERE
BAROMETER
ANEMOMETER
1. – CONE-SHAPED CLOTH BAG OPEN AT BOTH ENDS
2. – USED TO FIND THE LOCATION, MOVEMENT, AND
AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION.
3. – THEY ORBIT THE EARTH AND PROVIDE IMAGES OF
WEATHER SYSTEM.

WINDSOCK
RADAR
SATELLITE
WHAT ARE LINES THAT CONNECT AREAS OF EQUAL
PRESSURE ON A WEATHER MAP CALLED?
ISOBARS
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLIMATE AND
WEATHER?
•Weather in the atmosphere conditions at a
particular time
•Climate is the weather patterns in an area
over a long period of time
NAME THE FIVE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CLIMATE
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
LATITUDE
PREVAILING WINDS
MOUNTAINS
LARGE BODIES OF WATER
OCEAN CURRENTS
WHAT ARE THE THREE CLIMATE ZONES OF THE WORD?
1.TROPICAL
2.TEMPERATE
3.POLAR
