Add to note sheet during
powerpoint
Earth’s Atmosphere
Objectives:
• Name the common gases in the atmosphere
• Describe the structure of our atmosphere
• Explain what causes air pressure
Mixture of solids, liquids and gases
Normally:
• 78% Nitrogen
• 21 % Oxygen
• 0.93% Argon
• 0.03 Carbon Dioxide
• Up to 4% Water Vapor
Sulfur+ Oxygen + Nitrogen + Sunlight  SMOG
Other things in the Atmosphere
• Solids ===> Dust & ice
• Liquids ==> Rain
Why is the atmosphere
important?
• Protects us from UV rays from the Sun
• Holds in heat to warm the Earth at night
• No atmosphere = No Life
Troposphere
Closest to Earth
75% of air molecules are here
Weather, Clouds, & Smog are here
Colder with rising Altitude
The tropopause is the altitude at which the
temperature stops decreasing.
Stratosphere
•
•
•
•
Jets fly here
Ozone layer is here
Hot !!
At the stratopause, air temperature stops
increasing with altitude.
Mesophere
• “Middle Layer”
• Coldest layer of the atmosphere
• Air temperature decreases with altitude.
• Temperatures stop decreasing with altitude
at the mesopause.
Thermosphere
• Very Hot!!!!
• This is where meteors burn & turn into
“shooting stars”
• Includes the IONOSPHERE –
– Layer of electrically charged particles
Exosphere
• Merges with outer space
Magnetosphere
• Invisible force field
• Acts as a shield from Electromagnetic
radiation from the SUN

• Measured with a BAROMETER
• What causes it????
