What is the primary factor that
drives our weather?
solar radiation
Tornado Alley exists because
__?__ collide there.
a. cP and mP air masses
b. cT and mT air masses
c. cP and mT air masses
d. cT and mP air masses
c. cP and mT air masses
In the United States, areas on the west side of a
mountain range typically receive more
precipitation than areas on the east side of the
mountain range. Which of these factors is
LEAST important in explaining this
phenomenon?
a.
b.
c.
d.
Weather systems tend to move from west to east in the U.S.
Condensation usually occurs in a humid air mass as it cools.
Water as a liquid has greater density than water as a solid.
The temperature of an air mass is reduced as it rises.
c. Water as a liquid has greater
density than water as a solid.
What is one characteristic of weather
you would expect on the Leeward
side of a mountain?
Dry
warm
What is one characteristic of weather you would expect near
an ocean?
Stable temps through year
a lot of precipitation
Where on the Earth do the sun’s
rays hit at a 90 degree angle?
equator

Since more of the sun’s rays are
absorbed the equator than at the
poles, a heat imbalance exists.
Two phenomena help transfer
this heat, name one
Global wind patterns
ocean currents
Which of the following statements
describes what happens when the sun heats
water and land?
A. Land heats more slowly than water does.
B. Water heats more slowly than land does.
C. Water and land absorb heat from the sun at
the same rate.
D. Both absorb heat at the same rate, but water
releases it faster.
B. Water heats more slowly than
land does.
Throughout any given day the
sun’s rays strike earth’s surface
where much of it is absorbed
changing to heat. This heat then
transfers itself to the air directly
above the surface primarily
through radiation. What does the
warmer air now do and what is
the name of the process?
Expands and rises, convection
Answer 3-1
Name any one windbelt
Tradewinds
polar easterlies
westerlies
Answer 3-2

wind belts tend to curve due to the
________ effect
Coriolis effect
Answer 3-3
Tradewinds are located between
which two points?
Question 3-3
C and D
0-30 degrees N and S
Answer 3-4
The westerlies are located between
which two latitudes N and S?
Question 3-4
30 and 60 degrees
In between the convection cells located
at Point A we would find
a. High pressure and clear skies
b. Low pressure and clear skies
c. High Pressure and cloudy skies
d. Low Pressure and cloudy skies
d. Low Pressure and cloudy
skies
Answer 4-1
In both climatographs, which month
shows most precipitation?

orbital change
Global warming
C. Orbital Change
There are 4 primary factors that
can cause climate change. Which
factor can cause an immediate
change in climate lasting several
years?
Volcano eruption
Which one of the following statements best
explains why climates at continental shorelines
generally have a smaller yearly temperature
range than inland climates at the same latitude?
A. Land changes temperature rapidly, due to the high specific
heat and lack of transparency of land.
B. Land is a poor absorber and a poor conductor of heat
energy.
C. Ocean water changes temperature slowly, due to the high
specific heat and transparency of water.
D. Ocean water is a good absorber and a good conductor of
heat energy.
C. Ocean water changes temperature
slowly, due to the high specific heat
and transparency of water.
Answer 5-1
