Cause of storms and tornadoes
 Strong cold jetstream hitting warm humid air
from Gulf of Mexico
 up to 72 unconfirmed tornadoes, estimated to
be at least in the F-3 category (winds ranging
from 255 km/h to 330 km/h) => possibly F-5
 storm warnings preceded twisters in the most
hard-hit areas (Alabama => 46 tornado warnings
were issued in an 11 1/2-hour period)

through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.
• April 3-4, 1974, outbreak of tornadoes
killed 310 in the U.S. and 8 in Canada
• May 1999, up to 70 tornadoes killed 44
people in Oklahoma and Kansas
