Types of Weather
o There are many different types of weather,
and the weather changes every day
 Sometimes it might be sunny
 Sometimes it might be cloudy
 Sometimes it might be rainy
 Sometimes it might be windy

Weather Forecasts
• Meteorologists (me-tee-or-ahl-oh-jists)
– Scientists who study the weather
– Help tell what kind of weather is coming
• The Weather Channel – Local Forecast
Types of Clouds
Cirrus
Stratus
Cumulus
Nimbus
Precipitation
Precipitation is a huge word for moisture falling from the sky.
Moisture can fall from the sky in many different forms.
rain
sleet
hail
snow
The kind of precipitation that falls depends on the temperature of the air.
What Causes our
Weather?
• Air Masses
– All air moves in what
are called masses
– All places that are
covered by the same
large air masses have
the same weather
– The temperature of
these places is about
the same
– Storms occur when air
masses meet
• Air Fronts
– The places where cold
and warm air masses
meet are called fronts
– Cold fronts often bring
showers
– Warm fronts almost
always bring rain or
snow

Violent
Storms
Thunderstorm
Hurricane
~Storms with heavy rains and strong wind are called thunderstorms~
~Powerful thunderstorms can produce small, violent storms called tornadoes~
~Storms that form near the equator, over the warm oceans, are called hurricanes~
~Some storms have very cold winds and heavy snow, called blizzards~
Tornado
Blizzard
Humidity
• The amount of water
vapor in the air
• The air feels sticky
when the humidity is
high
• Temperature-humidity
index – THI
• Comfortable = <70
• Uncomfortable = >80
