The
Digestive
System
Lesson 4- small and large
intestine
:
• Students will gain a full
understanding of how the
digestive and excretory system
work in their own bodies
You will use and
understand the scientific
process for groups
experiments
 What
is the first part of the digestive system?
 What is the second part of the digestive system?
 What is the third part of the digestive system?
 Describe to a partner how the mouth and
esophagus work together to digest food.
small
intestine: a long
tube of muscle and
tissue that breaks down
and absorbs food.
villi: finger-like tissue in
the small intestine that
absorb tiny food
particles into the blood
stream.

 Large intestine: a wide tube of
muscle that removes water from
undigested food and fiber.
 rectum: the end of the large
intestine.
 anus: opening where the waste
leaves the body.

 Before
scientists perform and experiment
they form a hypothesis ( a guess based
on what we know already).
 A hypothesis is not always correct.
 They are learning tools used to guide us
 Today
we will predict what happens to the food
after it travels through the stomach.
 Earlier in the week you used a bag to act like a
stomach and created chyme. Can you
remember what was in the chyme?
the juice acted like
our digestive juice
 Take
a look at the chyme now. What
observations can you make?
 Make
a prediction about
what will happen to the
chyme after it leaves the
stomach.
 think about what you know
to make a prediction
 Then write it down on your
recording sheet.

will need:
nylon stockings one for each group
latex/non latex gloves one for each student
a bowl or plate to catch spilled chyme
Butcher paper to cover desks
salt water
1 empty 2-liter bottle with a very large vertical cut in
the side o
marbles
paper towels 2-3
Pass out all blue the materials needed to each group.
 One
student will hold
the stocking over a
bowl
 Two student will pour
the chyme into the
stocking.
 The last student will
squeeze the stocking
so the chyme is
pushed down.
Did
you notice what happened
to the food left inside the
intestine?
Did you notice how some of the
small food particles, “nutrients”,
were able to make their way out
of the lining of our intestines?

Now that our food has passed
through the small intestines, we
need to travel to the large
intestines.
The bottle will act like a large
intestine. The marbles and water
are the food coming out from the
small intestines and the salt is the
vitamins and minerals still left in
the food. The paper towel is the
lining of the large intestine.
Make a prediction as to what will
happen when the paper towel is
placed over the food in the large
intestine. Record it on your sheet.
 Lay
the bottle on its side with the whole
facing up. Place the marbles in the
bottle and pour the saltwater. Fold the
paper towel and lay it gently over the
marbles. Let the towel sit for a couple of
minutes.
 The teacher will bring the bottle around
and you will gently touch the paper
towel with two fingers. Then taste your
fingers.
