ABOUT POLISH NATIONAL PARKS
In our „great and beautiful” country we have 23 national
parks,122 landscaped parks, 1481 nature reserves, and
36417 natural monuments. We are going to describe you
The National Park of Wielkopolska.
HISTORY OF THE PARK
The National Park of Wielkopolska was created on April 16, 1957 pursuant to a
regulation by the Council of Ministers, the area within its borders was 9600ha,
and 5100 was to be administered by the Park. In 1996 a new regulation by the
Council of Ministers concerning the National Park limited its area to 7584ha
and created a protected buffer zone around the Park. This zone's area,
together with the area of the Park, totaled 14840ha. Some areas were
excluded form the Park, such as the urban areas of Puszczykowo, Mosina and
Stęszew. The National Park of Wielkopolska is located around 15 km south of
Poznań and has a very convenient bus and train connection with this city
(Poznań- Wrocław rail line), and through Poznań, thanks to many fast trains,
also with Warsaw.

Park's most beautiful trough lake with unique flora and fauna linked with its water
habitat

the aim of preservation :
process of ecological succession; the lake is at the stage of gradual overgrowing
and shallowing
Description : A zone with a trough lake under preservation. The lake is at the stage of
gradual overgrowing and shallowing, with clearly visible areas taken over by plants,
corresponding to the successive stages of ecological succession.
WORLD OF FAUNA
• The fauna of the National Park of Wielkopolska is characterized by a huge multitude of species
belonging to various systematic groups. Central European and Eurosiberian The species are
predominant in the Park.
• The richest group are the invertebrates, with the most numerous representation of insects, with over
three thousand species. The forests are also full of beetles.
• Among them are such protected species as the stag beetle or cerambyx cerdo, but also the more
common ones which actually damage the trees, among others, pine trees - two species of tomicus
piniperda, phaenops cyanea (pine pest) and striped ambrosia beetle. Dry and warm locations are
inhabited by orthoptera, such as the great green bush cricket or the field cricket as well as
hymenoptera, such as, among others, the southern wood ant.
• The world of arachnida is also extremely richly represented. From some more interesting species, it
has been determined that you can find the Argiope bruennichi spider here, the biggest
representative of the araneidae family in Poland, and the water spider - the only species in the
country which spends its whole life under water. Mollusks form another important group of
invertebrates. There are around 104 species of such animals present in the Park, among others, the
zebra mussel and two species of snails, including the helicella obvia.
FLORA
• The world of plants in the National Park of Wielkopolska is extremely abundant. From the
geo-botanical point of view the Park is located in the Wielkopolska-Kujawy region. It has
been determined that the plant species naturally occurring here are: 1120 species of
vascular plants, 148 species of moss, 150 species of lichen, 500 species
of algae, 800 species of fungi.
• The main element of the Park's flora consists of Eurosiberian species, among others, the
common pine (its share in the Park's forests is 70%), as well as many plants of the forest's
ground cover, such as herb Paris, or May lily and Centraleuropean species, for example,
the pedunculate oak, hornbeam, yellow foxglove and white cinquefoil.
• From some northern plants, we could list the twinflower, a relict plant from the Ice Age.
Because of the influence of a mild and humid climate of the Western Europe, species of
a rather Atlantic character can be found among the plants of the National Park. Among
others, common honeysuckle, pennywort and barren strawberry grow here.
• A rare tree, sorbus terminalis, the so-called wild service tree, also belongs to plants
of a mild climate. Particular plant species are naturally grouped according to their
environmental requirements.
