How does force affect motion? Do all
forces affect motion?
Make sure to answer both questions! 
Review




What is a force?
What two things are needed to describe
a force?
What are the two types of forces?
What effect does force have on motion?
Newton’s Laws of Motion

Study Pack #
Today’s Goals…

I can describe how forces affect motion.
Newton’s First Law of Motion


An object will NOT change its motion
unless an unbalanced force acts on it
An object at rest remains at rest and an
object in motion remains in motion until
acted on by an unbalanced force
Inertia




Newton’s first law is sometimes called the law
of inertia
The tendency of an object to resist change in
motion
The more mass an object has the greater the
inertia
Consider what happens when you are in a car
and you turn a curve, how does this illustrate
Newton’s first law?
Newton’s Laws


Newton’s first law predicts when an
object’s motion will change
Newton’s second law predicts what that
change in motion will be
Changes in Force and Mass


any change in motion (speed) depends
on how much force is applied and how
much mass is involved
Think about the activity!


How did you increase the book’s speed?
How did you decrease the book’s speed?
Changes in Force and Mass


You can increase acceleration by
increasing force or decreasing mass
You can decrease acceleration by
decreasing force or increasing mass
Illustrating Newton’s Law

You and your partner are going to come
up with a way to illustrate Newton’s
first and second law of motion.
