Vibration effects
 Performance degradation of the LHC due to beam
offsets at IP, emittance growth from noise etc,
 Beam aborts if vibrations exceed a critical threshold,
leading to large orbit excursion and beam losses above
BLM thresholds.
EN/MME M. Guinchard, 12th May 2016 at CERN
6
Motivations
 Two projects motivates the network installation :
 High Luminosity LHC - CERN
Monitoring of civil engineering activities to
anticipate effects on the particle beams stability
 “Géothermie 2020” – SIG
Monitoring of the micro-seismicity to assess the
impact of earthquakes induced by geothermal
energy production
EN/MME M. Guinchard, 12th May 2016 at CERN
7
Motivations for High Luminosity LHC
 The HL-LHC civil engineering work implies the construction
of new access shafts and underground galleries
 This work will be partially done during LHC operation at
approximately a distance of 40m to the actual LHC tunnel
EN/MME M. Guinchard, 12th May 2016 at CERNc
8
Motivations for High Luminosity LHC
 Sensitivity study carried out during the last year confirmed
that civil engineering activities are critical for the LHC beams
EN/MME M. Guinchard, 12th May 2016 at CERN
9
Motivations for Geothermie 2020
 Earthquake and LHC operation
A magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Costa Rica (05/09/2012 @ 14:42:10 UTC)
‘struck’ the LHC during stable colliding beams.
Arrival of the first waves at CERN ~15:06 UTC.

Motivations for Geothermie 2020
 Large earthquakes (M ~6-8) have a clear impact on LHC even at
a large distance from the LHC ring. We have survived all events
(maybe with some luck !).
 Resonance report confirmed the sensitivity of our installations :
EN/MME M. Guinchard, 12th May 2016 at CERN
11
Motivations
Install a network of geophones should help us to :
 Monitor civil engineering activities and anticipate their
effects on the beam stability

Need to use very sensitive /low noise equipment's
 Assess better the possible impact of earthquakes
induced by geothermal energy production.
 Need to use standard seismic equipment's
