SWAN NETWORK 2012
SWAN NETWORK 2013
Millennium client “Compression” setting: III
Support enabled to Help Resolve a Problem
 But on Feb 28th found it causes MilCirc to
consume 100% processing power
 Noted as a SWAN-only problem & DO NOT USE
was added to account by III
 March 28th: enabled by III in spite of known issue
 “The root of this issue is the fact that this “safe at all
other sites” setting happens when enabled on your
system to cause the serious performance problems”

Software Fix Under Development by III
Monday April 1st : “This is Not an April
Fools Joke”
 Sunday night, WebPAC process
wrote into Temp directory 4.3 GB of
data, filled root partition
 Caused Millennium System to barely
function
 Software Fix Under Development by
III, but requires Release 2011
upgrade
Have you seen this?
 Millennium JAR error: the
specific JAR file name will
change (“Could not find xxx”)
 If so, contact SWAN Member

 Sunday May 12th 3-4pm
 Monday May 13th 2pm


RAILS network affected
SWAN network
No issues with
Millennium servers, but
Millennium client at
member libraries slow
during dates & times
SWAN needs a new network

Old MLS domain must end (mls.lib.il.us

swan.mls.lib.il.us = WebPAC
Move to independent network within RAILS data
center (currently mixed in with RAILS Burr Ridge
office network)
 Current external & internal IP address must change
 Prepares SWAN for any future network changes

IT Survey will be sent out: 2 week completion

(example OverDrive, 3M Cloud, etc.)
Prepare for go-live day changes

Survey has 11 Focus Questions
Purpose:
 Gather your IT & Technical contact info
 Finalize SWAN’s new internal IP address
 Identify 3rd party software that integrated with
SWAN’s Millennium ILS at your library
 Create a profile on what network equipment
SWAN may have to contend with during transition
Survey Questions: Part 1, 2, 3 & 4
1. Who is your staff Primary Contact for Technology
Support/Decisions?
2. Secondary Contact for Technology Support/Decisions?
3. Do you use a Technology Support contractor for your
primary or general technology support in your library?
4. May we add this contact to SWAN emails about the
migration?
Why do we need this?
 Need contact for advance planning & coordination
 As the changes are made, some problems might occur &
SWAN needs an emergency IT contact
Part 5: Are you using any of the following
Millennium modules/services? Check all that apply:
 Patron API
 SIP2
 Millennium Express Lane Self Check (not 3rd party self
check)
 Ecommerce Fees and Fines (not 3rd party or State of
Illinois ePay)
 None of the Above

We know this, but part of the goal here is make
libraries aware of the services which could be
affected
Part 6: Do you have a network subnet in the
10.x.x.x range?:
 Yes
 No
 I don't know


Very important that you answer this “Yes” or
“No” rather than “I don’t know”
“I don’t know” answers will be followed up
with a phone call by SWAN to determine the
answer
Part 6 (cont.): Do you have a network subnet in
the 10.x.x.x range?:
 If so, what is the IP address prefix?
 If so, what is the CIDR block or subnet mask?



SWAN is trying to determine what our new
internal IP address should be
We don’t want to move to a new internal
address and conflict with your internal
network over the VPN
Example: 10.0.5.x/24
Part 7. SWAN libraries have a
SWAN-managed Sonicwall
firewall appliance to provide
a secure VPN connection
from the library to SWAN for
access to the Millennium
servers and that is managed
by SWAN. Does the library
also have a second/parallel
firewall appliance that
manages library connections
to other non-SWAN services?
 Yes
 No
 I don't know



Why is this important?
Your internal network is
hidden from SWAN
Your IT staff/contractor
might have created a
network within your
internal network that may
require advance
preparation for our
changes
Part 8. Do you have any of
these other network
appliances that your staff
or your general technology
support contract manage?
 Router
 Traffic shaper
 Proxy Server
 Digital Modem (for DSL
or Cable Internet
connection)



Why is this important?
These devices within
your network might
point to SWAN, control
SWAN traffic, or point to
SWAN
We want to work with
your IT staff in advance,
prepare
Part 9. Do you use any of
the following 3rd party
applications or services
which may access
Millennium?
 3rd Party Self Check
 Envisionware
(PCReservation, et al.)
 Comprise Technologies
(SAM, et al.)
 Evanced Summer

authentication)

Millennium may have been
used in the configuration and
setup in many locations to
enable access to the servers.
Do you have any references
to {internal IP prefix} in any of
the following locations on
