VOIP Phone Implementation
Project

Voice Over IP
– Provides voice communication
over an IP network

Cisco Phone

Project is still
in progress
My Responsibilities

Gather phone information from a Call Distributor
Recorder (CDR) and verify inventory of old phone lines
(Over 250 employees) by tracing phone numbers to
physical jacks.

Provide VOIP training assistance to users.

Install VOIP phones and software.

Support and troubleshoot the VOIP phone system and
its components.

Keep inventory of VOIP phones and phone
components.
Challenges Faced

Gathering necessary data from the old system to
transfer to the new system.

Keeping inventory.

Trace phone numbers and lines to physical jacks.

Working extended hours past work day so that
production was not stopped.
Experiences

Learned how the old phone system was wired.

Learned how to trace and punch down wires to
activate phones. Similar to how house phone
wiring works.

Introduced to a new software (CDR) and phone
system(VOIP).
Virus Cleanup Test Lab

Lab was set up to practice pushing required virus
protection patches over network using System
Management Servers (SMS).

Virus Name W32/IRCbot.worm. It was first
detected on the system on August 16, 2005.

The backdoor-worm
provides unauthorized access to an infected
computer and also has the capability to spread to
remote computers using the PNP exploit.
To fix the problem:

Computers needed to be patched with a hot
fix known as MS05-039 and delete infected files
with the virus scan software.

Push MS05-039 patch to all computers using the
SMS application from one remote site instead of
going to each computer individually installing the
fix.
My Responsibilities

Set up a test environment
in the test lab that
emulated a computer
network by building a
server and setting up three
virtual domain controllers
on a machine.

Set up three virtual clients
(instances of a machine)
on a machine to emulate
those of users on the
network and connect the
clients to the domain
controllers.
Challenges Faced

Being a state agency it was vital that
production was not affected much.

We needed to resolve the virus as quickly
as possible before it affects important
resources.

Extended work days (Longest was a 20
hour work day).

task)
Overall Experience

My overall summer internship experience was
very insightful in many ways. I got my first
chance to see what working in the IT field was
really like. I also learned new technologies aside
from what I already knew. The internship also left
me curious to learn more about Network
Administration.
Most importantly I feel like I came away from the
internship confident in knowing that the IT field is
for me.
