Overview (What is VoIP?)
 Voice over Internet Protocol
 Involves the delivery of voice information
over
 IP based networks. i.e. Internet
 Used to transmit voice, fax, data and
multimedia all in one network
How does VoIP Work?
 Sends voice information in discrete digital packets
rather than sending it through the public switched
telephone network (PSTN).
 Takes an analogue voice signal and converts it into
a digital format so that it can be delivered over an
IP network. i.e. Internet.
 By using a router-based gateway, a PC-based
gateway, a PBX-based gateway and others it can
perform the conversion from an analogue signal to
a digital format.
Detailed Explanation
 PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
– POTS based on Circuit Switching
– Today it is out of date
– ISP’s pay for long distance access
 VoIP takes advantage of this
Detailed Explanation
 IP telephony
– Packet switching using H.323 Standard
