The Grapefruit/Hollywood
Diet
By Kayla Oxland
What Is It?
• a protein-rich meal plan that focuses on
consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice at
every meal
• The grapefruit diet is a 12 day plan and the
goal is quick weight loss
• Most of the diets include a daily calorie intake
of less than 1000 calories
What Started the Grapefruit Diet Fad?
• There was a 12 week pilot study, led by Dr.
Ken Fujioka, that studied metabolic factors
and monitored weights of 100 men and
women

What Is the Promise to This Diet?
• The promise to this diet is that one will lose
10-12 pounds in the matter of a few days –
due to fat burning enzymes in grapefruits
• Promises quick weight loss without starvation
and eating normal meals at normal times
Pros and Cons
Pros: - the results
- vitamin C is great for the immune system
- incorporates low calorie foods and highly
nutritious foods
Cons: - isn’t backed by proper research
- grapefruits can interfere with the action of certain
medications
- it has very many limitations; makes people abandon the
plan easily; one needs a complete variety of different foods from
different food groups
Health Studies
When I relate this fad diet to the studies of health and nutrition earlier in this
unit I realize that in this fad diet, one will not get the same nutrients one
would get if they ate a well balanced meal with all the foods from each and
every food group. This diet would be very unhealthy for teenagers because
we are in the midst of growing up and puberty and we need the nutrients
from all the food groups to develop our bodies and systems within.
Continually, people who are athletic and sporty need to snack on proteins
during the day to rebuild muscle and tissue after practices, tournaments,
games, and competitions. Also, snacking is NOT an unhealthy thing. Of course
if someone snacks on chips and candy everyday in between every meal, it is
unhealthy. But if one comes home from school and snacks on some carrots
and hummus, it is completely fine to snack! Ultimately, this diet is for people
who want to lose weight in a short amount of time; perfect for a before
vacation touch up or a summer touch up. However, if one did this all year
round, I would not recommend.
