The First Computers
• The Analytical Engine is described by
some as being the first computer
invented by Charles
Babbage in 1833.

• 1941 - German engineer, Konrad Zuse,
develops first working programmable
calculator.
• Bell Telephone Laboratories develops
the transistor in 1947.
The IBM 360
• 1964 - IBM introduces the IBM 360,
which quickly becomes the standard
computer used in the United States and
around the world.

• Paul Allen and Bill Gates develop
BASIC for the Altair 8800, and
Microsoft is born.
Altair 8800
• Considered prehistoric by today’s
measures.
• It had no keyboard or monitor.
• But acted as a foundation for what we
have today.
The Internet is Born
• ARPA, founder of the ARPANET came
from the Soviets in the 1950’s
• Refined throughout the next few
decades, between the 1980’s-1990’s the
Internet comes alive! And thus Myspace
and other cult websites!

Effect on Communication

As the years progress, technology
has served us well. Computers are now
the backbone of society, and without
these devices, communication across
the world would not be nearly as easy
and productive as it is today!
