I. Communication
• The sharing of feelings, thoughts,
and information with another
person.
II. Effective communication
A. I-Message – A statement that contains.
1. A specific behavior.
2. The effect the behavior has on the individual.
3. The feeling that resulted.
B. You-Message – A statement that blames
or shames another person
instead of expressing
feelings.
III. Active Listening
• Type of listening in which a person
lets others know what they said was
heard and understood.
IV. Active listening response types.
1. Clarifying response – Listener asks for more
information.
2. Restating response – Listener repeats what was said
in their own words.
3. Summarizing response – Listener reviews major
ideas expressed.
4. Confirming response – Listener acknowledges the
feelings expressed by the speaker and to show
appreciation for the expression of those feelings.
V. Nonverbal Communication
• The use of behavior rather than
words to express feelings.
VI. Mixed Message
• A message in which verbal and
nonverbal behavior do not match.
VII. Passive Behavior
• The holding back of ideas, opinions,
and feelings.
VIII. Aggressive
Behavior
• The use of words and/or actions
that show disrespect towards
others.
IX. Assertive Behavior
• The honest expression of thoughts
and feelings without experiencing
anxiety or threatening others.
