Chapter 1 Building Responsibility
• What is Communication?
– The process of sending and receiving messages.
– Communication is like playing catch:
The Communication Process
• The sender encodes and transmits the message
through a given channel (the way a message is sent).
• A message is words, body language and symbols that
communicate thoughts or ideas.
• The receiver intercepts and decodes the message
and then transmits feedback
• Feedback is words, body language and symbols that
respond to the sender’s message.
The Communication Model
Communication Barriers
• Any obstacle that gets in communication barrier.
There are five communication barriers:
– Social = they aren’t part of my group (these are social,
economical, peer or professional groups).
– Cultural = we don’t have the same background,
religion, family type, or speak the same language
– Educational = I am too smart for them or they are too
smart for me (either perceived or real differences)
– Environmental = there is something physical blocking
communication from happening
– Attitudinal = somebody doesn’t like the topic or
person who is speaking (bad attitude)
5 Levels of Communication
• Intrapersonal – communication within
yourself
• Interpersonal – communication with you and
one other person (You + 1)
• Small Group – at least 3-7 people
• Public – classroom or assembly size audience
• Mass – global communication (radio, tv,
worldwide web, etc.)
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Definition of needs: A need is something that is
necessary for organisms to live a healthy life.
Beginning from bottom to top explain the
importance of these needs in their daily life.
Physiological needs: Are daily
needs which are most important.
This need must be met before any
other need. Next safety & so on &
so on up there pyramid.
Safety needs: Seat belts,
insurance, alarms (car & house)
etc…
Belongingness: Needing to be
liked or loved.
Self-Esteem: Esteem high
confidence in yourself both
physically & mentally. Example; Do I
like my appearance/my health. Do I
like the knowledge I’ve gained.
Self-Actualization: Is the ultimate
goal. “Be all you can be” “Reaching
your full potential”
Random Notes
• We rely on non-verbal communication more
than we do verbal because 85%+ of
communication is non-verbal
• Symbol – anything that stands or represents
something else
• Integrity – is simply doing the right thing when
no one else is looking
• Ethics – knowing the difference between right
and wrong
