Peak Experience

People are more likely to get into the flow when:
They’re doing something where their skills match the
challenge of the task
 Flow occurs when the goal is clear
 When there’s constant and immediate feedback about
how close you are to achieving that goal
 Flow occurs when you’re free to concentrate fully on
the task

Ten Conditions for Group Flow
1.
The Group’s Goal

If the goal is well
understood and can be
explicitly stated, it’s a
problem solving
creative task.

2.
Close Listening

Group flow is more likely
to emerge when everyone
is fully engaged in which
members of the group do
not plan ahead what they
are going to say but their
statements are genuinely
unplanned responses to
what they hear.
Ten Conditions for Group Flow
3.
Complete Concentration

Flow is more likely to occur when attention is
centered on the task and small annoyances
are not noticed.

4.
Being in Control

People get into flow when they
are in control of their actions and
their environment.

5.
Blending Egos

Each person’s ideas builds on
those just contributed by his or
her colleagues.
Ten Conditions for Group Flow
6.
Equal Participation

Group flow is blocked if
anyone’s skill level is below
that of the rest of the
group’s members; all must
have comparable skill
levels.

7.
Familiarity


Group flow is more likely to happen when players
know the performance styles of their teammates and
opponents.
If there’s a specific goal and the participants do not
share enough common knowledge, the group will
have difficulty accomplishing its goal.

8.
Communication


Group flow requires constant communication.
Kind of communication that leads to group flow does
not often happen in the conference room.

9.
Moving it Forward

Listen closely to what is being said; accept it fully;
and then extend and build on it.

The Potential for Failure


There is no creativity without failure and there is no
group flow without the risk of failure.
The key is to treat every activity as a rehearsal for
the next time.
