The history of
Kaohsiung(Taiwan)
A great presentation, Mei! Interesting topic and
good visuals. I put in some corrections for verb
tense, which is unfortunately very important for
history.  Great job!
Old name--打狗(Takau)
• Meaning:
Before 15C.,Aboriginals called Makatau
lived in Kaohsiung city .
”Takau”means bamboo forest in their
language. People used bamboo to protect
their tribe .
When the Han group came, they called this
place Takau
16~17C.
• Before the 16c. , fishermen who came
from Fujian took a break here after
fishing. Pirates from China and Japan
would attack them. Some of the
Fujianese fishermen stayed in
Kaohsiung ,they lived in 苓仔寮(Lingya
district)
• In 1624A.D, Taiwan became a Dutch
colony. They began to tax the people.
• 1661A.D., Cheng Ch'eng-kung ‘s army
beat the Dutch. In order to increase
food, they farmed and cultivated the
land actively.
• Cheng commanded the army to
cultivate the land. And he taught the
aboriginals to produce sugar from
sugarcane.
前鎮、右衝(右昌)、
援剿(燕巢)
A fisherman was caught in a typhoon
when fishing in 1673A.D. He drifted
to 旗後, and then he went home to
encourage his neighbors to come here.
When his neighbors moved to 旗後,
they built a temple as a blessing.
Ching dynasty
(1683A.D~1895A.D)
• IN 17c., the Ching dynasty ruled
Taiwan .
• First region was called 鳳山縣
(Fongshan City ) set up in what is now
Zuoying(左營).
• But more and more people came to
Taiwan, so the government built a
new wall in Fongshan(鳳山) .

Making salt
• The weather is hot and dry every
October to April in Kaohsiung.
• So Hakka from China came to make
salt in Kaohsiung. We called “瀨南鹽
場”what is now Yanchen District.
A big change
After the Ching dynasty
• In 19C. Taiwan became very important,
because many countries wanted to trade
with China and Japan, and Taiwan is
located along the trade route.
So many countries hoped to trade with
Taiwan.

• After the war in 1860A.D, Taiwan
was forced to open its ports,
including the port at Takau.
• As a result, many foreigners came to

from this time.
First--economic
• Foreigners, especially British, wanted
to buy Taiwanese products, for
example, tea、sugar and camphor(the
material of early plastic).
• Sugar is produced in Kaohsiung.
