A DIVIDED KOREA

After World War II, Korea was divided into
two countries. The countries were divided
at the 38th Parallel

North Korea supported by the Soviet
Union

South Korea supported by the United
States
1950

On June 25th 1950 the North Korean Army swept
over the 38th Parallel and invaded the south.

By September 1950, the North Korean Army
controlled all of South Korea except the tiny area
of Pusan

South Korea asked the United Nations for help.

The Soviet Union failed to appear in the
United Nations so the United States
agreed to send troops to help South
Korea.

The United States launched a surprise
attack and trapped the North Korean Army.
½ were captured ½ fled to the north
1951-1952

The American Army and its United Nations
allies pushed the North Korean Army all
the way to the border with China.

North Korea was ready to collapse.

To save the North 300,000 Chinese
soldiers entered the war
1952

The U.S. general, General Macarthur
wanted to use nuclear bombs against
China but the U.S. president Truman did
not agree.

The war continued until they reached the
38th Parallel. Where the war began.

5 million dead.

The French took control of the fight in
Vietnam after WWII. The people of
Vietnam wanted their freedom, but the
allies believed that they could not govern
themselves….
 They believed that the people of Vietnam
wanted Communism!
 North Vietnam = Communist
 South Vietnam = Democratic


By 1965, he sends
180,000 Americans to
Vietnam
After the French Failed to Win the
War…The U.S. Enters
The war will be fought from 1960-1975!
 Three U.S. Presidents will send troops to
Vietnam. (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon)
 1968 is the turning point in the war.

 Bobby

 Martin Luther King killed
 Tet offensive (major offensive by the Vietcong)
 The people of the United States growing tired of
the war. – Civil Rights movement – time to fix
problems at home!

By 1967, over
500,000 soldiers in V.
Vietnamization
The communist Vietcong were relentless
and never gave up.
 The United States realized that they could
not keep spending money on a lost war.
 In 1969, President Kennedy starting
withdrawing troops from Vietnam called
Vietnamization = slowly withdrawing
troops while S. Vietnam built up its
forces.


Thick Jungles – Snakes, Lions, Rats,
etc…
Major bombing campaigns by the
U.S.
-Carpet Bombing
-Napalm
-Agent Orange poisonous gases
-Drugs – heroin, marijuana, cocaine,
prostitution
CAMBODIA
Cambodia suffered a lot of U.S.
bombing during the War in
Vietnam!
Cambodia remained a very unstable!
 Communist rebels known as the Khmer
Rouge set up a brutal government under
their leader Pol Pot.

Massacre of Millions
The Khmer Rouge Killed
¼ or 25% of the
population of Cambodia.
A Vietnamese invasion
overthrew the Khmer
Rouge in 1979.
