GENERAL CHARACTERISTIC
- period of unprecedented economic growth
-The United States became the most powerful country in the
world
-Direct result of the Civil War
1) abolished slavery
2) broke the political power of the Southern planters
3) opened the way for a free capitalist development of all the
United states in the Union
The 12 years that followed the Civil War (1865-1877) are
called a period of Reconstruction.

RECONSTRUCTION
-The South was occupied by Northern troops and democracy
made some real progress
-The blacks were given the right to vote –
number of them were elected to the U.S. Congress and
various state legislatures in the South
2 REASONS FOR RECONSTRUCTION POLICY
1)The idealistic wing of Republican Party – to protect Blacks
2)The materialistic wing – hoped to hold the South for voters,
offices and power

RECONSTRUCTION
-The North won the war and slavery was finished, but little
was done to help the Blacks.
-They got less education, earned less money, and continued
to suffer prejudice from the southern whites
KU KLUX KLAN
-After their defeat the southern states tried to limit the rights
of the Blacks by various local laws and the secret organization
the KU KLUX KLAN harassed or even lynched Blacks.

KU KLUX KLAN
-Was founded in 1866 by defeated Southern planters
-It was an instrument of terror against the newly-freed slaves
-By 1877 the Northern Army was withdrawn to give antiblack elements and free hand in terrorising black people
-The democratic laws passed during the
Reconstruction were repealed, black
members were forced out of Congress
and state legislatures

-1894 – Hawaii
-1898 – Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines (after the war

-Cuba* - was proclaimed formally independent, but also
remained under U.S. influence (until the victory of Fidel Castro
in 1958)
By 1890 the United States had surpassed Britain and became
the leading world power.
