Alcatel Customized
Training Site

Dr. Carl Rebman
Background
• Alcatel is a French telecommunications company which
offers integrated end-to-end voice and data solutions.
• Alcatel Government Solutions (AGS) is a U.S. subsidiary
of Alcatel USA that provides services and products to the
US Government
• Alcatel has a training implementation under the Alcatel
University site
• Most, if not all of the training material is general in format
and does not necessarily speak to a specific customer
network design
Proposal
• Alcatel does not have customized training material available online
for some of their biggest customers: US Army, US Navy, and
Department of Homeland Security
• I propose standing up a web portal that will allow customers listed
above to login to a customer service portal
• Once there, based on the information the user queries for, training
material can be viewed online, as well as information pertaining to
the account the user queries
• Potential to greatly increase the long-term prospects for continuing
business with those accounts
• leverage this position by increasing brand familiarity as well as
loyalty by constantly providing additional benefits via training
materials
Success and Failure
• Capability to continue adding new and relevant content
as well as ensuring that the content posted is accurate
and correct
• An attractive and user friendly site must be presented
• Content posted on the website will require the input and
review of all current members of the Alcatel Federal
team
• This will guarantee that the material is technically
accurate as well concise enough to provide an added
value to the customer
Similar Sites
• There are a number of vendors that provide education
material online
• Most do not speak to a customer’s specific design
• Some examples of vendors providing useful training
material on their sites include Cisco Systems and
Microsoft Corporation
Hardware/Software Requirements

Existing educational services site would contain a hyperlink to the actual
web server that will host the front page to the custom training site
The customized training site server will be based on Microsoft Internet
Information Server (IIS) version 5.0 or greater, with support for all Active
Server Pages (ASP) extensions
The server will require an Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) connection
to a back-end database, preferably consisting of Microsoft Access
The Access database will have links to training material in the form of text
documents or PowerPoint presentations
Storage space will be required to maintain the files being shared to the
customers
Dell PowerEdge SC1425, a dual-Xeon 3.0 GHz processor with 4GB of main
memory, priced at $3,682, should be adequate to support the web traffic
and content load that will be placed on the site

Milestones
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Milestone 1 February 9, 2006: Begin working on project proposal.
Milestone 2 February 16, 2006: Submit project proposal for consideration
to Dr. Rebman.
Milestone 3 April 20, 2006: Submit final project proposal to Dr. Rebman for
review.
Milestone 4 April 21, 2006: Begin work on the header and footer for all
pages, create template for all pages, create database to be used for user
accounts and containing links to materials.
Milestone 5 April 25, 2006: Begin collecting training material for posting on
the site. Populate database with links to materials. Create queries for
training materials.
Milestone 6 April 30, 2006: Integrate database queries into search page.
Finalize all web design and form flows. Begin testing site.
Milestone 7 May 15, 2006: Deliver final site after testing phase.
Challenges and Solutions
• Possible inability to download the posted training content
• In order to mitigate this problem, it is recommended that
the content administrator verify each link when it is
posted into the content database
• This verification should be done from a web host located
off-site from the web server and database.
Analysis of Success
•
•
•
•
Milestones are accomplished within the require time
Budget is not exceeded
Ninety five percent of users surveyed via email are
happy with the flow and form of the site
Information and presentations can be retrieved by users
and the information is accurate
Transfer of Authority
• Project termination will occur after all of the milestones
and test objectives have been met
• The milestones are a direct reflection of the project
phases
• The site administration and management will then be
handed over to the internal Alcatel Government
Solutions training department
• They will manage the actual content of the material
posted on the site and also mange the user account
requests and maintenance operations
This Concludes the Presentation
