Shock
3 things you need for a healthy
body
1.The Heart must be functioning
2. Oxygen-rich blood must be
circulating throughout the body.
3. Blood vessels must be
undamaged and able to adjust
blood flow.
2 blood flow activities
1. Raise 1 hand over your head
and put your other hand
below waist. When teacher
tells you to look at both
hands.
2. Move hand in the direction
demonstrated by the teacherlook at hand.
Shock
• Is a progressive condition in
which the circulatory system fails
to circulate oxygen rich blood to
all parts of the body.
• Vital organs will not function
properly and the body will start to
fail.
Types of Shock
• 1. Anaphylactic Shock- a lifethreatening condition when the body
has an allergic reaction to something.
Example: bees, peanut butter, and
seafood.
Alex Baptist died due
to a peanut allergy in
Kindergarten.
Two attempts were
made with an epipen but where
administered
improperly. One
women actually
stuck herself instead
of him.
Cardiogenic shock
• Failure of the heart to effectively
circulate blood to all parts of the
body. Heart attack
Hypovolemic Shock
• Severe bleeding or loss of blood
plasma due to internal or external
wounds/burns or with severe fluid
loss.
Oil burn
when hose
broke
Neurogenic Shock
• A disruption
of the
nervous
system which
makes the
blood vessels
expand and
blood
pressure
drop. Fainting
Septic shock
• Toxins caused by a severe infection
causes the blood vessels to dilate.
8yr old Mike lost hands
and feet due to a
bacterial infection which
deprived oxygen to them.
Signs and Symptoms

CARE
Have them lie down on their back to rest
Keep victim from getting chilled or
overheated.
• Elevate legs 12 inches to get blood to vital
organs.
• Monitor ABCs-do not give fluids
Do not elevate the legs if:
• Victim is nauseated and having
trouble breathing
• Suspect a head, neck or back injury
• Broken bones involving hips or legs
• If moving them causes pain.
Concerns with
children
Shock may
develop with
fluid loss ie.
diarrhea or
vomiting so
replace fluids
immediately or
