Music Industry Careers
It is very difficult to outline careers paths in the music
industry because it is an industry characterised by
fragmented structures and unpredictable turns.
Sometimes careers advancements can be lateral rather
than linear: thus a music critic turning into A&R.

Music Industry Careers
“Performers are certainly the most visible human component within the
music industry. That visibility, however, is only partly determined by
qualities such as talent and good looks. To a very great extent, any
successful performer owes the mechanics, logistics, financial viability,
timing and extent to that popularity to the efforts of a vast and varied
collection of music industry professionals who have no part in the actual
creation of music”

Music Industry Careers
• Most people generally start in the music industry in any
capacity they can, such as running errands at record
companies, mailing posters to venues for agents or
doing the general filling and photocopying in a
manager’s office.
One school of thought believes that this is probably the
best way to start as it would give you a broad knowledge
of the industry.
The other maintains that such a de facto apprenticeship
system is inefficient and is likely to reinforce bad habits
on a generalisational basis.

Career Development
Formal Education
In the past the industry hasn’t regarded tertiary qualification
as a major prerequisite for employment. This is gradually
changing particularly in areas such as Marketing,
Management & Accounting.
However, “Music is one of the great ‘can do’ industries,
which will always value results over degrees”.
There are a number of Skills Programs and Learnerships
that are currently being run by the Setas to develop the
much needed “SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ATTITUDE”.
