so.

the Mosaic law, but Gentile Christians

Thesis: Jewish and Gentile Christians
are required to keep the Mosaic law.
Question #1:
Is this true?

care about this issue?
Question #3: Why should I care
about this issue?

2 Strongest Arguments for Messianic
Judaism
Logical: God doesn’t change,
therefore His rules don’t
change.
Biblical: Verses in the New
Testament say the Mosaic law is
still in force.
New Wine Into New Wineskins
Do God’s rules change?
Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant
on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has
fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
–
Genesis 1:29
The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts
of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every
creature that moves along the ground, and upon all
the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands.
Everything that lives and moves will be food for you.
Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you
everything. - Genesis 9:2-3

Do God’s rules change?
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following
instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter
any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost
sheep of Israel.”
– Matthew 10:5-6
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth.“
- Acts 1:8

Do God’s rules change?
After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his
disciples asked him about this parable. "Are you so
dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that
enters a man from the outside can make him
`unclean'? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his
stomach, and then out of his body." (In saying this,
Jesus declared all foods "clean.")
- Mark 7:17-19
New Wine Into New Wineskins
Do God’s rules change?
If perfection could have been attained through the
Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was
given to the people), why was there still need for
another priest to come--one in the order of
Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? For when
there is a change of the priesthood, there must also
be a change of the law…. The former regulation is set
aside because it was weak and useless (for the law
made nothing perfect), and a better hope is
introduced, by which we draw near to God.
- Hebrews 7:11-12, 18-19
New Wine Into New Wineskins
Do God’s rules change?
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two
one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of
hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its
commandments and regulations. His purpose was to
create in himself one new man out of the two, thus
making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both
of them to God through the cross, by which he put to
death their hostility.
- Ephesians 2:14-16
New Wine Into New Wineskins
17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or
the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to
fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth
disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of
a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until
everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks
one of the least of these commandments and teaches
others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom
of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these
commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness
surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the
law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
– Matthew 5:17-20

A Better Logical Argument:
• A grand vision requires changing
plans.
• God’s vision is a grand vision.
• God’s vision requires changing plans.
Or we could say:
To accomplish His plan,
God must change His plans.

The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country,
your people and your father's household and go to
the land I will show you.
"I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you."
- Genesis 12:1-3
New Wine Into New Wineskins
Observe them carefully, for this will show your
wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will
hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this
great nation is a wise and understanding people."
What other nation is so great as to have their gods
near them the way the LORD our God is near us
whenever we pray to him? And what other nation is
so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws
as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the
first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and
there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the
new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her
husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne
saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he
will live with them. They will be his people, and God
himself will be with them and be their God. He will
wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more
death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order
of things has passed away."

"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old
garment, for the patch will pull away from the
garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men
pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins
will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will
be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new
wineskins, and both are preserved."
- Matthew 9:16-17

Question #2: Why should the church
care about this issue?
New Wine Into New Wineskins
Though I am free and belong to no man, I make
myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as
possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the
Jews. To those under the law I became like one under
the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as
to win those under the law. To those not having the
law I became like one not having the law (though I am
not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so
as to win those not having the law. To the weak I
became weak, to win the weak. I have become all
things to all men so that by all possible means I might
save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel,
that I may share in its blessings.

Rules Relating to Levitical Priesthood
#373 – Not to Tear the High Priest’s
Robe
"Make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth,
with an opening for the head in its center. There shall
be a woven edge like a collar around this opening, so
that it will not tear.

#287 – Capital Punishment by Fire
"If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is
wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire,
so that no wickedness will be among you.”

Question #3: Why should I care
about this issue?
New Wine Into New Wineskins
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand
firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened
again by a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 5:1

Positive Effects of Messianic Judaism:
1. Renewing interest in reading the
Old Testament.
2. Reminding Christians that we are
under some law (Christ’s law).
3. Reminding Christians of the new
blessings of this new age.
