Endocrine System
Endocrine System




Endocrine – “ductless glands”
Secretions directly enter blood and travel to every body
organ
But not all cell respond…only target cells w/specific
receptors
Hormone
•
•
signal molecule that binds to cell receptors
•
•
•
•
Change cm permeability
Synthesize proteins
Stimulate mitosis
Activate/inactivate enzymes
Regulate long term or continuous processes
Stimuli



Stimuli - activates the endocrine organs
Most hormones regulated by neg feedback
3 types of stimuli:
•
Hormonal
•
Humoral
•
Neural
• Most common
• By other hormones
• Blood borne chems (ions/ nutrients)
• By nerve fibers
Structural Classifications of
Hormones


Peptide Hormones
•
•
•
•
Made of amino acids
Initiate rapid changes in the body
Stay in blood (broken down there)
Bind to receptor to initiate 20 messenger inside cell
Lipid Hormones (steroids)
•
•
•
•
•
Made from cholesterol and fats
Long lasting effects
Broken down within a cell
Used to regulate body fluid and sexual reproduction
Diffuse through cell membrane of target cells
Organs of Endocrine System








Pituitary Gland
Pineal Gland
Adrenal Gland
Thyroid
Parathyroid
Pancreas
Thymus
Gonads
•
•
•
Ovary
Testes
(Placenta)
The Endocrine System Project

Create a Poster on an endocrine organ including the following
information:
•
•
•
•
•


Title (name of Organ)
Location in body & Size
Names of Hormones secreted & their functions and target organs in the body
Brief description of any associated diseases (over or underproduction)
Any other interesting facts or tidbits
Present Organ to class and Point it out on dissectible torso in room,
complete chart as other groups are presenting
Write an essay giving an overview of the endocrine system &
description of each of the glands. Finally, if you had to give up one
of your endocrine organs, which would it be and why? (It must be an
organ you currently have in your body!)
