How do we teach phonics in school?
•Letters & Sounds
There are 6 phases.
Phase 1
Develops the importance of
developing reading and listening skills.

systematic high quality phonic work.
Phase 3-6 Continues to build on skills and

However……
The English alphabet has 26 letters
but there are
44 different sounds!

plaque
For example the sound ‘igh’ is
also made from these letters
ie =pie
Y = fly
i= blind
i_ e = bike
Children will need to know these
sounds so they can hear them in
the words and then use them when
reading and writing independently.
