Vocabulary

A root word or base word is a word or word part to which a prefix or
suffix can be added. The root word carries the main meaning of a
word. Examples: pure, phone, read, school, human, load.

For example, the root word room can have affixes added to it: roomer,
roomy, roommate, roominess.

A prefix is a word part that is added to the beginning of a word or word
part. It can have one or more syllables

Examples: ad- , anti-, con-, dis-, ex-, inter-

Prefixes make a new word when they are added: anti+social =
antisocial Con+form = conform
A suffix is a word part added at the end of a word or word part. It can have
one or more syllables.
Examples: -able, -ful, -ment, -tion, -ate, -en
Suffixes make new words when they are added: port + able = portable;
enjoy + ment = enjoyment.
