Raising money to help men, women and children who have cancer
www.cancerbrowndog.co.uk
Introduction
brown dog
is a registered charity
formed in 2000 by ex. cancer patient Mark Storer
with Anil Patel and Peter Little
that raises money to help
men, women and children
who have cancer across the UK
In the last 10 years
brown dog have raised
£250,000
brown dog is proud of the fact that
every pound raised goes directly to the
people who need it
we have no admin costs!
9 years ago a cancer patient had a mission
When I was told I had cancer and that I would need 6 months
of chemotherapy I thought my luck had run out.
When I was told after my treatment that I was in full remission, that’s
when I realised I was really one of the lucky ones.
That’s when I knew in my heart that I needed to raise money to say
thank you to those who had saved my life and help others who have
cancer.

8TH SEPTEMBER 2001
The challenge planned for June had to be postponed due
to the foot and mouth epidemic – it went ahead in September.
With less day-light in June the first two mountains had to be
climbed in the dark!
Our Objective
was to raise
£5,000
It was a memorable day!
£23,000 was raised
We used the money to create
‘The Wordsworth Day-Room’
The Wordsworth Room provides a greater degree of home type comfort
for patients to make their stay in hospital more comfortable which helps
improve their moral, which subsequently helps them to cope with
treatment and improves recovery.
Brown Dog was created….
We decided that if we were going to do more
fund raising events we needed to have an
identity.
At the time most of the people who did the first
challenge worked for Lloyds-TSB and as such
Mark suggested we called ourselves
‘brown donkey’ as a spoof of the Lloyds black
horse brand.
However, one of the team said “why do we
want to be called brown donkey when you
have a brown dog – let’s call ourselves
Brown Dog”.
So brown dog was formed named after Mark’s
faithful chocolate Labrador called Colin.
Here you see a picture of a very young Colin
that we used as the brown dog brand
on our marketing materials and t-shirts.
Sadly Colin died earlier this year, age 12,
ironically from cancer – his legacy lives on!
Brown Dog – Our Vision
Our Vision
 To raise £1million so that we can help as many people with cancer as possible
 To increase the profile of Brown Dog across the UK to increase
our membership and fund raising capability
 To receive positive feedback from the people we support confirming the difference we
made to their lives.
 For Brown Dog to continue to flourish in the next generation, by introducing new blood
and ensuring youth is represented on the Trustee Board

2010
In June 2010, 87 people supported the 2010 skin cancer appeal (including doctors and nurses ) by undertaking one of our
two physical mountain challenges in the Lake District – The Wordsworth Challenge (to climb 8 mountains in 12 hours
including ScaFell Pike) and the Tiggy Winkle Challenge (a 19 mile walk around Derwent Water and the smaller mountains
around Keswick).
What was our objective?
To raise £30,000 to purchase the state-of-the-art Molemax III imaging scanner for Leicester Hospital Trust
What did we achieve?
We raised £64,000
Including £7,000 from Lloyds-TSB Match Giving and other organisations.
How are we using that money?
£28,256 has been used to purchase the Molemax Imagining Scanner – which is now fully operational
(which is providing faster, more accurate detection and particularly helping patients at high risk with multiple moles)
£24,230 has been used to purchase the Mohs equipment (supported by a donation from East Midlands Cancer Trust)
(Creating a Mohs Micrographic Laboratory in the Dermatological Surgery Department which will help patients who have large, locally
aggressive skin cancers, occurring on the face, or those that have recurred after the failure of other treatments.
£12,000 remains in the brown dog charity account and will be used shortly to fund other cancer related initiatives.
Every penny raised through sponsorship and donations has been used to purchase equipment that will make a real
difference to people with cancer
